Bonneville wants to cut off while driving it.

My 1994 Bonneville SE is constantly cutting off while driving it down the road. Every 2 miles or so it does this. My grandmother was driving it Thursday and I was following her to the mechanic shop for them to check it out and it won't be till Monday when they check it out and find the actual problem. It cut off 6 times going down the road Thursday evening. I know that it's not a fuel system related problem. Any of you might know what could be causing this problem?

Couple of questions?
Does this happen at random? And does the car always restart?
When this happens does the speedo continue to show speed or does it zero out like the Tach?

pull codes . but i would suspect crank postion sensor or the igntion control module

(Just curious) How do you know that it's not a fuel-related problem?

Didn't say it wasn't.. Just asking general questions to help point us in the right direction..

Original Post said it wasn't fuel.

repinS: I honestly don't think it's a fuel related problem but then again I never know.
Jrs3800: The speedo goes to zero just like the tach and it also chimes three times telling me to check my gages when it cuts off. When it cuts off it will start back up and run fine and then it will cut off again after a few mins of driving and it's been very random lately for doing it.
rharper: Me and my mechanic actually tried pulling codes with it and it wouldn't pull any codes at all. It reader said it had an error and it wouldn't allow it to pull any codes which is kinda odd to my opinion.

The crank position sensor is a possibility...
But when the engine stalls and the car is in motion the Speedo should still report speed.. I am half tempted to say check all of the grounds on the driver and passenger side of the car..

Could the battery ground cable be a possibility? I know that will set the strangest codes if its corroded. Not to sure what would happen if it was losing connection.

Yes it would be good to check that ground as well..

I have some news for what was wrong with the car. It had a bad crankshaft position sensor and throttle position sensor. My mechanic fixed the problem and it also shut off of my long time burning check engine light in the car. It also has more power again and is getting better gas mileage too. I couldn't be happier now that it's fixed.

Glad to hear you got it fixed. I was gonna say check fuel filters being clogged. One of my parents old cars used to do that. It was a simple fuel filter issue.

Hi i have a 1996 bonneville and it cuts off while i drive aint no question about it. i dont no where to start. i would drive about 100blocks on my way to work before it would cut off and then when i try and start it again it does not start it wants to but does not. Its like someting is getting hot and the whole system shuts down. if i wait about 30 min it will start but wont go far untill it cuts off again. if i wait an hr or 2 it will drive another 100 blocks. so one day i was out far and was dessperate to get my car home and got it to start a second time i drove about 40 blocks and it cut off again had to wait 30 to 45 min for it to start again and the 3rd time it drove and did not cut off.
Recently i when to u-pull it and bought a used fuel pump from u-pull it and had a friend install it. It workd perfect the first day no problems once so ever the second day it drove half the day. when i tryd to jump in it and go to work it would not turn over. now it only goes about 10 blocks before dieing. So another friend told me to wait for the car to die and then check to see if the fuel pump is working before buying a brand new one and it seems to be working he said to take of one of the fuel lines and if it sprays out fuel it still works and was spraying out fuel lol. but sometimes i cant here the fuel pump and thats how i know its gunna start or not but what im having troule is it seems to be someting ellse to anybody have any suggestion maybe it could be a mixture of a bad fuel pump and something ellse???
I love my car and am dessperately tryn to get it to run good again please help me......
Its a 1996 and is not fuel injected somebody said maybe it could be some electrical maybe a bad computer but if the computer was bad wouldnt the car not turn on at all??

Ilovemybonnie, please continue the other thread you have started. Others will chime in on it as they see it, but this thread is over two years old. Please don't dig up old topics.

MINE DOES THE SAME THING,BUT NOT AS RANDOM,IT STARTS RIGHT BACK UP AFTER IT SHUTS OFF,I WAS TOLD THAT THE CRANK POSITION SENSOR MIGHT BE THE ISSUE

I had the same problem with my bonneville. Turned out to be the fuel pressure regulator
