I was recently told by a body repair specialist that utilizing wax on a modern clear coat finish is a big no no. He claimed it will dry out the clear coat and cause it to crack long before its time. Anyone??

I bet that guy isn't very busy is he? With advice like that, I would run away for sure. Wax will not dry out a clear coat and cause it to crack. A wax / sealant is actually a good thing for any car, including modern cars.

The only time you want to avoid a wax / sealant is with fresh paint.

Exactly. If only I had pictures to show you of what happens to the paint on a car when you don't wax it. I'll just say that it's not pretty at all.

A wax or a sealer would be a good thing as it supplies the paint with nutrients and oils

An abrasive polish will wear out the clear coat... Big difference here

Your color can go either way wax or sealant and look really sharp. I have seen one 2K+ Bonny in my neck of the woods that looked super.

What is your total budget you are willing to spend?

I am sure Ryan and I can make a few suggestions within your budget.

For over the counter product it is hard to go wrong with Mothers 3 step system and a lot of elbow grease. Your investment for the 3 products plus Mothers car wash and the proper applicator pads and cloths to take off the wax would be close to $50. I used the Mothers 3 step system for almost 15 years and was satisfied with the results.

95SLE - $50 just for a wax system. I am not sure how you would justify that.

Paint on this 01 is in really good shape. I just want to keep it that way. As far as budget........I have a buffer and would be looking for a good wax that can be applied and buffed off again. Try to keep me under $20.

First off, $50 is not much at all to protect the paint of your car. Consider how much it would cost to get it repainted properly. It would probably cost at least a few thousand dollars. Spend a little now and save a lot later.

No offense but if you can't afford to spend $50 to protect the paint on your car, you really shouldn't have a car. Cars are extremely expensive to maintain and keep running but I'm sure you know that.

I wish I had spent the money and time to clean and wax my old 94 but I didn't and the paint looked horrible after a few years. I've learned my lesson that it just isn't worth it to be cheap because you pay in the end.

I'm sure you can find a way to come up with $50.

For under $20 you are really into the grade "C" class waxes. The top of the line is Mothers the wax only. In the middle is Eagle One pure Carnauba and at the bottom is Rally cream wax.

D class is a wax like Megs Quick wax.

For a beautiful car like yours I would at least not stop at Mickey D's or Starbucks for two weeks and get a tub o P21S. You will be glad you did.

The guys and gals on this board are all about helping other members and saving you money. It is really hard to skimp on a wax and get a popping shine.

I also believe that dong something is much better than nothing at all. Who knows we may see each other at a meet and I can show you the difference between a $15 wax and a $35 wax. The extra $20 is not bad for the difference in the shine and the lasting power.

What do you think about the Eagle One Nanowax? It looks good for me on one application, and then like crap on another.

Megs professional products are great too. I've been using some of those, and some other smaller brand products.

P21s/S100 is great stuff, It's my wax of choice. For sealants i've used Megs #20/21 with great success as well. If anything it's even easier than the P21s/S100 to put on, and lasts much much longer. It doesn't quite pull colors through like the P21s though.

You can get a great wax for under $20. Collinite 476S. Check for it on ebay, should be about $15 shipped. Almost anything that is OTC isn't going to be very good.

M1611 Paste Wax was discontinued in the U.S. due to VOC regulations. Chances are you can still find it around.

Yes, #16 is around, but not easy to find. You usually will end up paying $30 for a tin. I'm with B2 and would suggest Collinite paste 476 or the liquid 845. They are great for someone that doesn't have a lot of time or money to wax. You can find either for $15-20 shipped. The 845 is a little easier to use, but the 476 will last a little longer. I have the 845 and it will make it 4-5 months easy.
