My turn to ask questions. Changing coils on a L36 to the style on a L67 is what advantage? Would they work better with simple mods.....exhaust upgrades? PCM redone?
All thses topics are great info for winter time work on mine.
Thanks

willwren and some of the other gearheads are the experts on this. I am going to repost some things willwren put in this thread. I cannot as yet tell if fuel mileage has improved. No long trips as of yet. I can tell you the fuel mileage is a little more consistent, the car seems to run a little smother, a little louder(?), and hopefully less ICM trouble. I changed the spark plugs and O2 sensor when I put on the new ignition as the old one failed before I could get the new one on. Even had to have it towed again. - BC

willwren posts:
The only change for you would be to go to the hotter 97 and newer L67 coils. Nothing else needs to be done.
The 92 in question has an older magnavox 'brick' which combined 3 coils into one and had weaker spark voltage and a less reliable ICM. Most of this conversation doesn't relate to your car

You may get a slight benefit from going to the somewhat-hotter L67 coils from 97 to 03.

The Series II L67 coils have a little higher output, more of a punch, than L36 and older L67 coils, to help fire the plug due to the higher pressure and heat in the cylinder. What you may or may not notice will be improved throttle response, starting and maybe mileage, however it won't be a huge change in these aspects, and YMMV.

Since installing the later "hotter" coils on my 94 (Thanks, Haro!) it starts quicker, idles a bit smoother, and the butt-dyno tells me I have picked up a little punch. Mileage is still the same miserable 15-17 MPG, but I drive twisty, hilly mountain roads, and I have a heavy right foot. I am switching from ARCO 91 to Chevron 91 for the next few tanks, just to see if that helps. For 15 cents more per gallon, I hope it does SOMETHING!

The later coils are a definite bonus.
