I plan on building and testing before I settle on what kind of upholstery I want to put on it. The plan with the box is still pretty much the same, a Large rectangle with a port somewhere in it tuned to about 50hz or so.

I am also currently amp shopping I stopped running my sony amp because it was getting VERY hot trying to drive this thing. the sub wants 350 rms and 1400 peak. i ran a kenwood KAC-8104D that I borrowed for about a month it is something like 500 and 1000 at 2 ohms it worked pretty good but it seemed to clip when the sub was doing just fine. I am considering the kenwood KAC-9104d which is rated at 900 RMS and 1800 peak at 2 ohms. I know it is overkill but I figured I could keep the gain lowered on it and if I decide to get a more powerful sub down the road I will already have an amp that can push it. if anybody has some good amp suggestions or box building advice it would be appreciated
What sub are you using again? That Infinity? And you are going to tune to 50 hz? That seems VERY high. I don't think I've ever heard of someone tuning above 40 hz for a daily system.

If you're looking for a good amp, the owner of Sundown audio is having a presale on the updated SAE-1200D for $250 shipped. It's a good amp that's capable of 1500+ watts and 1 ohm and 700+ at 2 ohms. I think they're expected to ship at the end of November. I have the original sae1200d and I've had no problems with it. Good company that makes good amps and the owner is a nice guy who is on the audio forums a lot so he's easy to get in touch with. Their official forum is at SSA.com and there's a thread on there for the pre-sale.

Edit: After looking at the specs for that sub it seems that still may be too much amp for that sub. It's rated for 350w RMS, correct? 700 watts might be a bit much for that sub.

the reason i was thinking about tuning it higher was to try to give me a little more punch for drums I'm not big into rap/hiphop so i prefer a little more punch and a bit less rumble

Have you thought about building a test box? Around 2 cubes, and use some PVC for the ports and mount them either partially or totally external. You can trim the ports to give you a tuning of, say, 35 hz and if you don't like it, you can trim more off to raise the tuning to, like, 38 hz, then 40 and stop when you find a tuning that is acceptable. You might find that tuning at 38 or 40 gets you what you want while still being able to have a box that can play more than a few frequencies.

I'm gonna do this with my 12. I listen to rap, but a lot of metal as well so I'm gonna tune between 35-38 hz probably so I'm gonna test it out before I build a nice box.

thats essentially what I am going to do, after thinking about it i think that tuning to 38-40hz would be more practical for my purpose

I just scored this amp on ebay for 48 shipped! http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_590 ... 8152D.html

it's a little older then the kenwood I borrowed but it's a little higher wattage and it's bass boost is variable from 40-100hz instead of just being 40 on the newer one

Good pickup.

Don't use bass boost, though. Keep it all the way down and set your gain with it off. The only time you should ever use it is if you can't get the output you need without it. Beings you have an aftermarket deck, I wouldn't even bother with it.
