If your '97 is like my '95, there will be three terminals on the MAF sensor. - A, B, & C. Unplug the electrical connector on the MAF. Turn the ignition on. Probing the contacts on the connector (not the sensor), you should measure 5 volts between A (Yellow wire) and ground; 12v between C (Pink wire) and ground; and continuity with terminal B (Black/White wire) and ground.

As my 1995 Factory Service Manual (FSM) states: "The MAF sensor produces a frequency signal which cannot be easily measured." What most of us do is unplug the MAF sensor and observe whether the car runs better. If it does, the MAF sensor is presumed to be bad. That is because when the sensor is unplugged, the PCM will compensate for a presumed failed MAF and restore some measure of driveability.

If the sensor does not produce a signal over a period of 4 seconds with the engine running, the powertrain control module (PCM) should set a P0101 diagnostic trouble code (DTC). But be aware that the MAF can be bad without setting a code.

Hi Bill would you have any info for me regarding the pressure in the return gas line?

Update: have received a replacement used MAF from Harper. Cleaned that replacement MAF just like Bill described and no problems anymore.

UPDATE: when installed PRO version of 92degrees thermostat, and flushed the heater core before that, all is great, lots of heat, like never had on this car.

UPDATE 2:

Even more heat after replaced belt tensioner as the hot coolant that goes to heater core goes via the tensioner body. You see there was a valve that I guess prevents coolant from draining into cabin in case the heater core has hole.
However it is my strong belief that the valve was stuck closed or nearly closed and that prevented me from having heat (flow) in winter for years.

This winter will be just like when bonny was new, hot and spicy...LOL.
