Exactly. You can't see 5 over, 10 over is just on the edge, but 15 and 20 over? I can tell that in an instant, and I'm not a cop. Especially on the freeway if you're blowing by people in the fast lane. I've been thinking about getting a radar detector, but rarely see that many cops, and plus, newer big tractors and combines set off K-band, as that's how they track ground speed. And spring and fall, it'd be going off constantly.

Cops need a radared speed that is documented in the gun to pull someone over and write them a citation. Pulling them over and ticketing them because they "felt" that the person was speeding is illegal.

I also was not blowing by anyone Ed. There was nobody else on the road!

I'm not justifying my speeding, but I was not excessively speeding (excessive is subjective anyways), nor was I putting any other drivers in danger or weaving or anything like that.

No, I understand your points, but they can hit the radar quick once they see you speeding. Very few cops have their radar on all the time anyways, especially if they're hiding waiting for someone to be speeding.

Thats true, but many of the nicer radar detectors are quick enough to detect those radar beams when he fires them at a driver ahead of me, even miles (I-65 is FLATTTTTT!)

Point and case, I got caught. Hopefully the radar detector will help it to not happen again, along with slowing down a little bit.

Right, if you're in a group of traffic, and he's bipping people ahead of you, the radar detector will save you. But if you're in the middle of nowhere, and he doesn't have his radar on, you're caught before the detector beeps. On the other hand, if he's a mile away with his radar on, you can slow down and avoid a ticket too.

I never get more than 10 over unless the flow of traffic is doing more. The 8 lane freeways in California were scary, especially in an '81 Toyota Tercel. My brother is a Sgt in the SCHP and he says they aren't usually after the one's going 5-10 over as long as they aren't recklessly weaving through traffic. He wants those really moving, 10 over and up, along with the reckless ones.

A cop doesnt have to radar you to pull you over and give you a citation. The cop can call any speeding reckless driving. Since the defination of reckless is up to the officer you have no chance.

There's a very neat gadget, cheaper than a radar detector, that is MOST effective in preventing a speeding ticket. It's called CRUISE CONTROL.

I strongly suggest you learn to use it...not only will it prevent speeding tickets...it may save your life someday.

Crap, that's a ton of money. Well, I know which state I'm never driving in, lol!!

Drivers in CA are nice. I bought my car out by Rancho Cucamunga. I flew into Ontario and the guy I bought the car from picked me up at the airport. He said everyone drives nice because the dont want to piss someone off in a gang.

Ever since about September of the year the state police have been everywhere. I got hit for going 70 on 465 a few months ago. Its completely for revenue generation how often do I see or hear about crashes along the stretches of road they sit on every day? Almost never barring icy conditions
To say they are saving lives and all that is a load of BS. Now if they are radaring in an area with high fatalities because of speeding or running lights etc then that's one thing. They bought the state police black mustang GTs specifically for traffic enforcement. In a time when the economy is poor is that really a good use of tax payer money? How often do they get in a chase where they would need that?

LIkely the REASON there are no crashes along that stretch, my dear, is BECAUSE of their patroling and ticketing.

While you may be entitled to your opinions of the politics behind your local police, under no circustances will I allow bashing of any officer or serviceman of any type. To say that "they do it only for this and only for that" is a false statement. The fact is that put their lives at stake to protect others...even those who chose to disobey the rules.

I was going to change the title of this thread...I may have to prevent people from thinking it's an "okay to bash cops" thread. It's not okay...and it won't happen here...and THAT, is no BS.

I'm not "bashing" any police officers individually more so I am "bashing" the state police department as a whole. I respect the work officers of the law do and am in no way demeaning them. They are just doing their job. However, I do have a problem with the whole way the ticket system works. Any revenues they get go directly into the state police themselves. A good way to overcome this would be to have the revenues go to a general fund. That way they are less likely to just attempt to generate revenue. Plus, the state police department doesn't fight "real" crime they really just enforce traffic laws. My real respect is for the local police that keep me and my family safe. When murder levels are some of the highest ever it just really annoys me that me and every other tax paying resident of Indiana is paying for mustang GT's for the state police. Oh, and I have rarely seen any accidents there even before the patrols started.

I was reading an article on MSN the other day about how we'll see more speeding tickets during the recession. Enforcing speed limits is lucrative business.

I do not like being pulled over for speeding. However, saying it's not fun isn't bashing the police. We have severe crashes performed by all sides of the spectrum, from trucks to bicycles. Mostly, none of them go faster than the speed limit. There are more things to assess, like potholes, odd and dangerous road markings, bent signs, and generally damaged roads that can hurt one's driving abilities. I was going slower than 5 mph when my pre-Bonneville vehicle was totaled.

I agree with Rad. I was not bashing the police, I was just complaining a little (just as everyone does when something goes wrong, even if it may be your fault).

I still stand by my statement that I don't think 20 over is excessive speeding. I am not unsafe when traveling at those speeds, and always slow down when there is other traffic around me, or the road is potholed, wet, or any other condition that would make speeding unsafe. Excessive is a relative term that is subject to opinion.
