Well, I broke down and purchased the $32 bottle of Bars leaks head gasket repair. I hate to dump that kind of stuff in my car, but I'm not real excited about tearing this motor down and replacing head gaskets. Sure enough, followed the directions and in 15 minutes, the problem was resolved. Not running hot, coolant stays full, starts instantly. I have a little stumble at idle, but I'm sure I've got at least one coolant-soaked plug that needs to be replaced. I'll let you know how long it lasts. Praying every time I crank it up that the fix will prove to be permanent.
Thanks for all your help gang!

That is why forums like this one are so valuable.
It makes pinpointing troubles much easier.

Oldman, glad to help.
Hope the Bar's keeps it "fixed" for you.

exactly, and the reason I'm liking the Bonneville more and more is that this forum has pinpointed so many of the possible trouble areas that you can't really find a problem that doesn't already have a resolution to some degree. I would have had a helluva time finding that bad data line splice under the drivers seat if it weren't for this forum.
