I don't remember what Eric's (yonkerse) setup was but his '05 SLE was the best sounding 3800 I've heard. Still obviously 3800 noise, but it was a decent tone and zero rasp that I heard. Wasn't terribly loud either.
I want to change mine up as well. Currently SD headers, Magnaflow cat & mufflers and stock res. I wouldn't mind quieting it back down and experimenting but as someone said, this is one of those costly trial & error things you'd have to commit to trying.
