No you have to drop the subframe down to get the trans out. There is no other way

I was not at all saying he was wrong, only to make sure that that was the problem before spending the money on a transmission. As I said, it was not to discredit anyone, we have just seen way too many cases where an expert GM master tech has told people things that were completely wrong, a big one that sticks out is people being told that the oil for their supercharger never needs changed as it gets changed with the engine oil. My Uncle was an ASE certified master mechanic and worked in dealerships for as long as I can remember.... I have seen him put a thermostat in backwards.
Just relax and realize that people are trying to help you, nothing more. You come here for help and we will do the best we can to try to help, but giving crappy attitude will shut that door quite quickly.

Not trying to give anyone a crappy attitude. I'm stressing big time here as I am supposed to be on the road back to California.
Here's a good question.… is the ring gear in that transmission able to be removed or is it fixed in there? FYI I am getting that 1997 GTP trans and it has the webbing on the back.
Second question - all I have to do is change over the valve body and channel plate and that hardened steel shaft for fourth gear and I should be good to go?

with the VB and CP you will need the wiring harness also
you will have to see if the trans has the external or internal range switch.

If this is the gear range switch the one I am about to get is external. I can take the one from the bad transmission and swap it over. I am sure this can be done yes?

That's the Park/Neutral switch.

the range switch is on top of the transmission.
it will either be a black box where the shifter attaches or not......
this is the external park neutral switch that sits OUTSIDE the trans
this is the internal park neutral switch that sits INSIDE the trans.
your SSEi probably dosent have this....if

To my knowledge the trans cannot be removed from the bottom of the car without removing the subframe. The entire engine and trans can be lifted from under the hood, or the entire engine/trans assembly can be dropped from below by lowering the subframe (this is how it is installed in the factory)
