What's the visual difference between the two? And actual number not just "oh it's a little thinner".

I don't know but from what I read as it gets hotter it stays thicker than the Dex III, meaning the Dex III thins out easier when heated.

Ahhh, I see Warren Oils does make a lot of their stuff but as far as the Dex III looks like Pennzoil/ QuakerState makes that.

From what I can tell SPEC is a company from the Mideast and I do know that Pen/QS are Shell oil products.

Gonna through in my 2 bits, been using Valvoline High Milage Dex VI for 3 years. I think it saved my tranny, when i did the switch it was like night and day. Before the Dex VI the tranny had 178,000. I am now at 199,000 and could not be happier. Gonna do a pan drop and filter gasket. Car was only driven in city conditions.

I've been running 100% Dex VI in my 2000 SSEi for almost two years now. No issues.

well if v1 does not thin out at higher temps it could only help and the trans does heat up

Ohhh, a fluid argument!

DexIII is spec for your car. If it's still available at a store, go ahead and use it. You aren't hurting anything as thats what was designed for your car originally. If DexIII is not available, it is superceded by DexVI (6 for you non-roman numeral folks), GM only licenses and supports Dex6 now. As such, GM says it's ok and that it is backwards compatible.

Straight from the horses mouth (I bolded it for you);

IMPORTANT: As with previous upgrades, DEXRON-VI fluids are designed to be backward compatible with earlier transmission hardware. But more important, earlier type fluids are NOT FORWARD COMPATIBLE with transmissions that were designed to use DEXRON-VI.
DEXRON-VI can be used in any proportion in past model vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, in place of DEXRON-III (for instance, topping off the fluid in the event of a repair or fluid change). DEXRON-VI is also compatible with any former version of DEXRON for use in automatic transmissions.

And;

IMPORTANT: DEXRON-VI Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) is the only approved fluid for warranty repairs for GM transmissions requiring DEXRON-III or prior DEXRON transmission fluids.

So where is the argument here?

Dexron VI, has better friction stability, viscosity stability, and foaming resistance compared to DexIII

My point is, GM spend millions of dollars on creating products (I.E. transmissions in this case), from R&D to marketing, and other stuff along the way. That "other stuff" is the fluid that runs in it. I don't get why people on here try to outsmart them. Regardless of how lubricant companies have to jump through their (GM's), hoops to get licensing, is really irrelevant. As long as it is blessed by GM, at the end of the day, that is what you should use! All the conspiracy theorists can come up with all the other B.S. excuses you want. GM designed their product, designed the fluid specs for their product, and as such, when they say DEXVI supercedes all previous, listen to them! Quit trying to outsmart them.

Also, I'd like to add, that GM's "Dex" line of products ISN'T just used in GM products. Toyota, Audi, BMW, VW, Rolls Royce (using GM transmissions), and several other manufacturers ALSO use Dexron and Dexcool. So when GM goes about doing something like this, and it impacts more than half of the automobiles on the road, you can bet they dot all their "i's" and cross all their "T's.

Use any brand licensed by GM for DexVI!

Really wasn't a argument but a conversation on which trans fluid to use and what others used or recommended. But that list you posted says it all the list should be made into a sticky for newbies and others that are wondering.
