if you want to do it on the cheap i would start with a ZZP catless Downpipe and a set up mufflers on the stock piping. I would definatly consider a 3" DP and Plog or Headers/DP. here is what i have heard on a 3800's/GM V6's:
Loud to quiet:
Straight pipe (sounds loud but not clean)
Glasspacks (loud still not clean but better)
Dynomax UltraFlo (clean but loud for a muffler)
Dynomax VVT (quiet at idle and cruse, flap opens under hard accel and gets loud like a Ultraflo)
Flowmaster (quieter then a Dynomax, sounds different cause its hollow with chambers)
Borla (medium sound, kinda equil all across the board)
Magnaflow (medium sound, smooth and quiets down as the Rpms GO UP)
Turbo Muffler... Magnaflow/Dynomax/Walker (quiet, flows decent)
Hope this helps.

Since my setup will actually benefit from dp back improvements, I've been looking into this a little lately. Haven't really found anything that wil turn the norm on its head yet.

LOL I remember Shadd running headers with a single muffler where the cat & resonator where. Then it ran back and split into two straight pipes with no resonators.
That car was soooo loud, it hurt your ears when he revved it. On the highway following behind him in my Bonne, he would open it up from 120 to 160 and the sound would turn heads from other cars on the multi-lane I-5. Willwren can attest to that!
....but it was freakishly fast! He holds the fastest top speed I've heard on this forum, even beating my top speed by 3 !
259 and also did 13.6 in the quarter.
Note that these speeds are in kilomileameters which when converted remain well below posted speed limits that must always be obeyed.
