GXP wheels are 18x8. The key to making 8.5" work will be the offset of the wheel you're considering. Too low and you hit your fender, too high and you won't clear the strut. If you were to err on a different tire size, I would go in the direction of slightly shorter than stock.

Hub-centric rings are absolutely key, also. Many aftermarket wheels have large hub bores in order to accommodate different makes and models of cars. Get the right spacer that will adapt the wheel to the 70.1mm GM 5x115 hub bore diameter. Sometimes you get lucky though - my aftermarket winter alloys are ~70mm to begin with.

From what i have read, most of the wheels that are supposed to fit are 35 to 40 mm offset. would you say either would work?

yes off set and hub sentric ring makes all the diffrence. wheel choice for us is very tuff. custom is way to go but that gets real $ real fast
