Oldsman003 wrote:that chime is super annoying, my current lss and my old ls had this same problem. that *dang* chime will just start chiming and wont stop. both of mine i went under the dash i believe on the passenger side hidden by the hush panel if you look way up in there you can see a small speaker, look real hard that is the chime. i disconnected both of mine. best thing i ever did, good luck.
I must express the need to use caution when doing this maneuver. In the older gens, the chime module may be tied to and control multiple systems. I know for sure the PA has the chime module tied to the power steering, and I think the cruise control is tied to it as well.

It is usually better just to fix the problem, unless you drive a '94 Regal and are annoyed by the dinging when you leave the turn signal on too long, then maybe...

I also mirror the thoughts on old threads too, despite adding to the mix....

It is annoying in the same way that any alarm is annoying---it is meant to alert you to a problem.
Hopefully, you're a hypervigilant person who watches the gauges and lights like a hawk.

My better half is in the habit of driving cars until there is practically nothing but fumes in the gas tank.
The dinging is good for compelling a stop at a gas station before it runs out of gas.
Yes--it has happened before---in other cars but not in the Bonnie.
Really pissed me off to have to walk to a gas station because the driver ignored the fuel gauge.

If you read why my chime was going off, you'll see how it could be unwise to ignore it or disconnect it.
It looked exactly like the MC reservoir was full.
If I hadn't been nagged by the chime and warning light, the result would not have been good.

My 98 SE does this, which I like. Saves me from having to tell my beloved to shut the freaking signal off, when left on.

the chime is not tied to anything other than the warning idiot lights in the car, it is only there to tell you your door isnt closed, low on fuel, etc... it is NOT tied into your power steering or anything mechanical like that. my oldsmobile hasnt had it hooked up for 200k miles, no issues... it nodes well for me because in my olds there isnt a low fuel light nor is there a chime to tell me i have low fuel so that doesnt bother me. you should watch all your gauges and lights anyways and not just drive and drive until the car stops. and if im not mistaken it is a short in the ignition switch that causes the chime to chime constantly. unless you want to pull the column apart and replace it, disconnect the chime and save yourself some money and hours of time.

In your case, this is probably true.

In my case, it's not. Hence the warning.

My Chime stopped when I repaired a brake line. The braking system was losing pressure and there was "supposed to be" a warning light on the dashboard but that failed to illuminate. So in my case the annoying ringing did represent something to repair that could have had severe consequences.

Unfortunate update but happy ending: Even after the tightening which stopped the chime, one of my brake lines blew out and I lost my power assist. Good time learn about that brake issue is on the PA Turnpike when RUSH HOUR traffic suddenly stops and you have virtually no brakes! P A N I C ! ! time. I'm alive, Bonnie is lucky to have only a small poppable dent. Could have been a billion times worse - BRAKES are important.

I know this is an old thread, but that is not a good idea. The chime can save your life. Find out what's causing it.
willwren wrote:Don't underestimate that chime. It could (and usually is) a very serious indication of a problem. Typically a master cylinder problem is indicated by that chime. By the time you hear it, you may not have much time left before you wreck.
Carefully check the braking system for leaks, fluid level, etc. Check ALL fluids, including the washer reservior.

My car did the same thing, I even went so far as to remove the parking brake chime. Turns out my brake fluid reservoir was empty. It was driving me crazy. Perhaps give that a look and see what's up.
