Trans arrived this morning via one of these: (had it dropped off at the local Fleet farm)

Now I just gotta find time to put it in. This weekend is tied with with the 4th, and I have conflicting schedules with the homework I need to do... ugh

Well the new trans is in and working great. I did the entire swap today, took me about 8 hours.

I have determined why the case failed. The trans that was in the car was a GM Certified Replacement and had bright red fluid. It couldn’t have been that old.
Image

The problem was that whoever installed the trans, did a piss-poor job. The rear trans mount was missing all of its bolts:
Image
And the engine to trans support bracket was contained only 1 of the 4 bolts: (I didn’t get a pic of this, only after I installed it)
Image

Its rather obvious now, the case is not made to handle that kind of power without some support. Its a shame this tranny is junk now, just because of the crack. It probably had another 100k easily.

Here is some more carnage:
Image
Image

The only thing holding the tranny to the engine was the "backwards bolt"
Image

The flywheel was also damaged:

So once I got the tranny in, I drained what was left of the fluid, and put in a new filter and cleaned up the pan.
Image
Image

Took it for a test drive and immediately noticed a loud clunk coming from the rear end. Put it back up on the lift and noticed the rear shocks were rusted out. I replaced them with some lower mileage units, but the clunk was still there. After I got it in the air again, I found that one of the rear subframe bolts was lose. I tightened it up and the clunk went away.

After a MAF replacement, the car runs and drives great. 60+psi of oil pressure, goes down the road straight, and will do 100mph no problem ;)

I'm guessing you had to grab a flywheel from the donor pile lol? And one must wonder why a rear subframe bolt was loose to begin with...

Prices have really dropped in the last year or so. It used to be worth about 6. This is current:

Excellent $4,275
Good $3,850
Fair $3,125

From looking at other similar ones on craigslist, I think I should be able to start the listing above $4500, but we'll see.

Awesome. I'm eager to see the clean-up pics. Will PDR for the door be cheap enough to do, or is it not cost effective with the flip?

What shotty work the previous installer did! Amazing the trans functioned at all!
One bolt holding it to the engine??

Way to go, Andrew. Can't wait to see the interior / exterior resto.

Happy 4th of July.

Well there are supposed to be 5 bolts holding the bellhousing to the engine. They were all there, but after the crack, only 1 bolt (the backwards bolt) was holding them together.
Image
Image

Here is a better example:
The red ones are the normal bolts, they go in from the tranny side into the engine
The blue one is the backwards bolt. It is called that because it is backwards of the other 4. It goes from the engine side into the tranny. It is very difficult to get to.
The yellow circle is just an alignment pin, no bolt there.

Are you holding on to the old trans for parts on future flips? It sounds like it could be a good parts source as long as nothing was seriously damaged inside.

Spent today flushing out all the dex and replaced with green. Also cleaned up the rims and tires.

Pretty much all thats left is the interior....but this one is so clean that I wouldn't have any regrets just listing it as is... but I'll still gut it anyways...

Looks great!

I would enjoy no sunroof, as long as it has the console. No chance for leaks.

00Beast has a good point with the no leaks to worry about.

My SE doesn't have a sunroof and I enjoy the extra headroom.

Plus, no sunroof = lighter car
