Your car looks great! I'd love tint on mine, but I wouldn't do the front doors so I think it would look out of place

Absolutely fantastic looking pics! It's a very nice car. We definitely need to meet up sometime.

I'd love to get mine tinted but it's illegal to have any on the front doors at all in Alberta. I work in emergency services so it would be in poor form to show up to work all the time with illegal tint  I just don't think it would look good if only the back was done.

ddalder ii know what you mean... but honestly my main reason before looks for tinting is migraines... the sun gives me headache and can cause me to black out... im still going to doctors n *shoot* but i doubt ill be getting anywhere... so they might give me a medical thinigi and then it'll be legal for me :D hahahaha
and also it wont look too bad.. it will actually give it that little darker look..

this is my dads.. just limo at the back

It's my understanding as well that you're okay with a doctor writing a letter. I love the look of tinted windows and would really like to have mine done. What's interesting is that I spoke with an RCMP Officer last night after seeing the thread and inquired about the current law. It's apparently a $37 fine. I was told it's illegal to install it (ie: have it done to your vehicle), but it isn't illegal for it to be on there. She said they have to prove that you had it done. I'll have to ask again how shops are allowed to operate if installing it is the illegal part. If you get the vehicle and it's already tinted there's nothing they can do. She said cases are quashed all the time because people simply say "It was like that when I bought the car". So... then comes the moral dillema LOL!

It seems to be the opposite here. The shops have signs and examples of illegal tint percentages displayed for everyone, mounted on the wall, advertise them online, etc. and install them on MN cars without a word about the legality of it. But it is illegal to have it on your car.

ddalder not saying you're wrong but from what i understood from an RCMP officer here in town that it is illegal to have tint regardless of when it was done.. the reason he told me was more of a safety reason... its safer that the front windows shatter when you get into an accident than them being stuck together.. because that would be the only way for you to get out of the car if the door was stuck.. but with tint on itll be a bitch to break when you're all injured and *shoot*.. to come think of it its true.. but meh...

i asked the same question about why would they allow tint shops to tint cars... he said many shops just say that the car owner can simply say this is a show car and i want it tinted... kinda stupid but thats what he said... he also said same with mufflers over 4" diameter.. they are illegal but everyone sells them.. again could be a "show" item..

and also the tinting ticket is $57.00 i have one in my pocket right now as we speak from my old grand prix...
It was written under different sections...
The tint violation is $57.00
or it can be written under the "fail to maintain equipment", $115.00

ive had 2 tickets in 3 years on my grand prix.. 1st one was issued by an undercover dick that charged me $115.00 and the one in my pocket now is $57.00

The only reasons i have heard for tint is because officers cannot see you when they pull you over or something similar, and it endangers them. modern windows are designed NOT to shatter.

The $37 was a typo, you're right it's $57.

Here is the section from current legislation the RCMP Officer was referring to:

http://www.qp.alberta.ca/574.cfm?page=2 ... 0779719557

Window glazing

69(1) A person shall not install, replace or cover the window glazing in a windshield or in a left or right side window of a motor vehicle that is beside or forward of the driver with a transparent, translucent or opaque material.

(2) A person shall not install, replace or cover the rear window glazing in a motor vehicle with a transparent, translucent or opaque material unless the motor vehicle has outside rear view mirrors on both the left and right that comply with section 72(2).

(3) A person shall not install, replace or cover the window glazing in a motor vehicle with a material that reflects the headlamps of approaching vehicles into the eyes of the driver of another vehicle.

(4) A person shall not install, replace or cover the window glazing in a motor vehicle with a material that reflects sunlight into the eyes of the driver of another vehicle.

(5) A person may replace the window glazing installed by the manufacturer of a motor vehicle with the same type of glazing.

(6) A person may apply clear untinted frost shields to a window of a motor vehicle only if they do not impair the view through the window by discolouring, scratching or damaging the glazing.

(7) A person may apply stickers to the window of a motor vehicle only if they do not limit the driver’s field of vision or otherwise impair the safe operation of the motor vehicle.

This is why she said if you fight it because "it was already like that when you got the car", the cases are being thrown out. Now if you lie to the judge about it and get caught... that's a whole new charge. Much worse than the glazing infraction.

As for the being trapped in the car... I can't accept that. Sorry. Did I ever mention what I do for a living? As a Paramedic, I've been to more collisions than I can even count and have extricated more patients from vehicles than I care to remember. Many, many of these were with vehicles that had tinted windows. While there is a possibility the tint could hold some of the glass fragments together, the window is still able to break and the tint is likely to tear with the force of impact alone. The tint is not going to remain intact is any sort of manner that would prevent escape. If the officer told you this, s/he obviously hasn't been to many collisions.

As for the "Fail to maintain equipment", I'll have to ask about that. It would seem that's a bit of a stretch. Probably why you got a ticket for glazing instead.

Modern auto glass definitely shatters. The difference is that it breaks into fairly small pieces and is therefore much safer. You won't have large pieces with long sharp edges that may cause serious lacerations or incisions.

Regardless, to remain within the purpose of this thread, I think it looks great on your car  I'm was just looking for ways to see if I could make it happen with mine while still remaining "within the boundaries of the law".

http://www.kaltire.com/retail/custom_wh ... brand=Core

the dealer put rims on the car that aren't even the correct bolt pattern?

From what I see here, they are only offered in 5/114.3. Our car takes a 5/115.

Some people say its too small of a difference to affect anything, but IMO it can be a safety hazard.

Just a little FYI you might want to get checked out.

I can understand now why tinting the front windows would be a safety hazard.

The glass would break but the little glass dice would be stuck to the film. I know, I had a tinted window break and while it was easy to kick it out, it bent over so when you climbed out the window it would act like a cheese grater and shred your body.... :eek2:

I disagree. If the glass or tint was bonded to the frame around the window perhaps, but it's not. When the glass is shattered and if the tint remains intact the glass will simply pull out of the guides along the top and sides of the window pushing out as a unit. To say it would shred your body is a little extreme. In fact, if the tint held many small fragments together it could easily be moved out of the way meaning a person would have to crawl through fewer glass fragments. Windsheilds are different because the are bonded to the body.

Yes I agree that the window will simply push out from the top and sides and lay down, but when it lays down it opens up the glass beads and the bonded to the tint glass fragments act like a grater on flesh.

Try it. Break a tinted window and push it out and see what it does. I did.

All I have is to offer is a couple of hundred real life collision experiences. Your scenario isn't the same as what realistically happens, particularly during a rollover. I don't want to hijack this thread and steer it off topic any further though so I guess we'll just agree to disagree
