You car stock will run 0-60 in 7.3 sec and the quarter in 15.5 sec @ 89 mph

With the 3.4" pulley and off road pipe, CAI and 180 stat with a PCM standard performance tune you can expect to shave a second off those times and trip the quarter at 95 mph.
Ive run 14.9 at 91 stock! hehe

OK OK and i guess a 180 T Stat, but no pulley, PCM, exhaust(now I have a Magnaflow cat), *dang* good for only having 1 Mod i'd say, enough about me, back on subject of the post....

So now you can see that adding a CAI and 180 stat will gain you about 1/2 sec, like it did for me also.
The next step for me was PCM and headers. That shaved off another 1/2 sec.
The pulley was good for another 1/2 sec. That got me to consistent 14.0 times in the quarter and 0-60 of 6 seconds.
Mods from that point on are very costly for a smaller incremental benefit.

No leaks, but it used 2 quarts in 3000 miles. Ive never had a car use a drop before, and all my previous cars have had much higher mileage. Looks like I'm short block shopping.

i have 335000 km on my ssei and still dont use a drop in 5000 km, not noticeable anyways. guess im just lucky. i even have a small leak in the front valve cover gasket and dont notice a loss.

gigolo was talking about my car with the 5* of kr at WOT. I ordered a 3.8 today to put back on since i went the mps route. I thought i had all my bases covered to run the 3.5 but its not in the cards for my car. I would make sure you can scan it before you take the chance

All that crap over a COLORADO HIGH ALTITUDE CAR? Gigilo really needs to clearly state the circumstances. I'd EXPECT your car to have KR issues unique to your altitude and climate.

Yourgrandma, if you're burning 2 quarts every 3000 miles, don't mod the car at all, and start looking for a replacement motor. A compression check in the meantime would be a good idea.

A qt every 3k is normal.

Not on a modern 3800 it's not. That's a sign of bad crap going on. 3800's (Series 1 and Series 2) are brutally tough and usually show signs of factory cylinder honing well over 150k. Rings and valve guides should be good for at LEAST that long. 1 quart every 3k is horrible for any reasonably maintained Series 1 or Series 2 motor.

If you're burning a quart or more every 3k, and there are no spots on your driveway, do a wet and dry compression check and report your numbers in the proper mechanical section.

I've seen thousands of 3800's in my years (since 2002) on several forums, and a few dozen I've had my hands on personally. Not a single 'normal' instance would be considered acceptable at anything more than 1/2 quart over 3000 miles. These motors don't burn or use oil under normal circumstances.

221,000 km on mine and even with a leaky oil pan gasket it uses less than 1/2 liter every 5,000 km. For the metrically challenged that would be almost 140,000 miles, less than 1/2 quart every 3,000 miles.

Even trashed motor on my truck (before I changed it out) didn't use that much oil, and the intake manifold was leaking badly.

It must be my valve guides then because its definatly not my rings

dirtracr95, telling people on this forum that massive oil consumption is either normal or acceptable is dangerous territory. It's not normal or acceptable simply because yours does. That's EXTREMELY uncommon on modern 3800's.

It may be common on OTHER engines, but not ours by any stretch of the imagination. Please be very careful how you word your replies and posts, as some people may not be able to seperate your experience from what they can 'statistically' expect from their own car.

my 2k was using almost that much before my LIM/VC gasket change I haven't changed it since then to know if that helped. but by no means do I think that is normal for it to use that much.

153,xxxx miles on mine btw

Is it possible a LIM could do this without having oil in the coolant? If its only bad by a port?

I'll be staying on top of the level better this time to be certain of how much it's going through.

I guess it's not all bad, a new(er) shortblock would go nicely with the brand new trans it got a month before I bought it. Hah, the trans might explain the motor.

No oil passes through the LIM, so idk how it could.

From the valley to the intake ports.

So for oil useage, were looking at either valve guides or rings?

Assuming I do put a shortblock in it, what else should I do while im in there? Cam, porting, etc?

Also, does the trans have to come out with it, or can it stay put?

Im sure theres a thread on it, but what kind of money is a swap going to be outside the short block itself assuming I do all the work?

Trans doesn't have to come out, but from what I saw this weekend, it's a big job.

Yeah, that I'm sure of. I'm going to watch the level closely and do compression tests, then look at buying a new short block if it's all bad news.

might not hurt to run some lucas oil stabilizer or engine restore to see if it helps, my truck with 234,000 miles used to smoke pretty bad and use oil through the passenger cylinder bank, and when i started using the lucas with my oil changes it stopped smoking and the oil usage stopped as well, i still lose some through leaks but it doesn't use very much oil in between changes maybe 1/2 qt per 3k or 4k

not saying that it works miracles or that you should use lucas and run 20lbs of boost or anything but it definitely does help

Yourgrandma, how many miles are on your car?

Hey elders, can valve seals go bad on the 38?
