people need to SLOW DOWN.

Post by Custom88 »

Jeeze. Last night the highways were absolutely horrible and peopel were still flying by me at 75+. I was doing 55 MPH. I had a mid 90's Ford Explorer in front of me for several miles that was doing around 55 MPH, so I just stayed behind them. Seemed to be a very comfortable speed I thought. Right over the crest of small incline, the Explorer started to slide side to side just a bit.. Then the rear end started to swing. The driver swerved over to the left lane, back to the right, back to the left, then eventually spun around completely and flew off the highway sideways off the left side. I put my brakes on as soon as I started the driver start to lose control, and even with stability control I was having trouble keeping the car going straight. Even the rear of the CTS wanted to break loose a little bit. I kept her under control though and pulled off the highway on the right side right near the explorer. I got out and walked across the highway (falling twice... it really WAS a solid sheet of ice!) I made sure she was ok, she was. She seemed to think we could get her car out of the median, even though two of the wheels were barely touching ground. Snow was up to her driver's side window! What amazes me even more is that people saw two cars pulled off the road, both with their hazards on, seperate sides of the highway, and people were NOT even slowing down, or attempting to. It just boggles my mind... So dangerous. I ended up calling for help, but ended up leaving after a few minutes because I just did NOT feel comfortable with how fast people were flying by. Last thing I wanted was another person to spin off and hit me standing off the roadway.

To be honest, I wouldn't slow down for someone on the road like that. If the road is that icy, I wouldn't want to risk putting myself in danger and possibly the people behind me. ABS can only do so much...

Anyways, glad you're both OK. I'm a pretty conservative driver, and I've seen people pass by me going 70 on the highway during a white-out, only to find them on the side of the road in a couple miles.

What I think is hilarious is when someone passes you like their heading to a fire, then at the next stop light or the next exit, you end up sitting right next to them.

Yeah, some people just seem to be in a hurry to get to nowhere.

Last week, during the heavy snowfall we got here in Ohio, I was going 45 (in a 55) on a state route, as it was REALLY hard to see, and I had 2 school buses, both loaded with kids, fly past me doing around 65-70. I was shocked. I'm glad the buses never wrecked, but I mean, that's just wrong doing that when you're transporting 20+ kids.

I think the braking was reactive to the truck wiggling. I would get on the brakes too if the car in front of me starts to break loose.

I'm very used to seeing 18-wheelers fly by me at 60-70 in heavy snow (or any bad weather). Last year during the worst snowfall we had here one was riding my tail, nowhere for me to go...flashing his lights as if he had to be somewhere fast. I have little patience for slow-moving, bumper-to-bumper traffic...in GOOD weather when traffic shouldn't be backed up. But in a snow storm with bad road conditions, I have all the time in the world. Some people just lack the common sense to have patience in bad weather.

Very true. I'd rather be late to an event than not show up at all.

Even in good weather people need to slow down. It's called a speed LIMIT for a reason. No need to be doing 50 in a 35, it's more wear on the brakes at the next light. Among other things.

I usually laugh at those people too. But sometimes it makes sense. If I see someone rolling a new vette or something powerful it really doesn't bother me to see them take off because well... it's fun pushing the pedal and sinking into the seat  . I know if I was rolling that ride I'd probably be having fun with it too. But there is a time and place for everything and city stoplights usually aren't the place.

There are a few places on the local interstates where WOT acceleration to 70 (happens to be the speed limit) is the only safe way to merge. And one place where the speed limit goes from 35 to 60 in the blink of an eye. It gets fun at times.
