Carwash tried to kill my car today!

Post by bonnevillain »

that was the most intense drier ever. my wipers flew all over the place, my sunroof was lifted up from the roof for a moment (while in the locked position).. thankfully it still works fine. The roof was buckling in and out (could hear the metal bending) and some water leaked through the door seal i replaced :sad5:

Did you let the car wash attendants know this? They may compensate you a little, or at the least try to fix it.

Only reason I would go through a carwash would be on a day like today where the car is filthy, but the weather outside is way too cold to warrant washing it myself.

I've had similar. The Sunroof moved up and rattled a bunch and my wipers were all over the place.

I tried a different car wash the other day. The dryers all sat in the middle and as the car hit them they would roll on the paint and "form" to the shape of the car. They worked *dang* good, but I didn't like the idea of the dryers rolling on my car anymore than the "soft cloth" dirt wash.

Needless to say, Ill stick to the touchless or DIY for the rest of the winter.

the new touchless washing going in around this area in all the Esso stations have a dryer that stays 2"-3" off your paint and follows the cars contures very will, I try to go once every week or two, because those washer have a high pressure under car wash, to remove all the salt build up.

Those touchless Esso washes (even the premium ones) don't do a very good job at cleaning off even dried up rain spray on the sides of the 95 :angry7:

which reminds me... gotta go through the automated to give the underbody a good spray, and then off to Krown rustproofing..

the new units they're putting in now are much better then the old ones, you just gotta find a station thats got one already.

Yep, thats the only reason I will go to a carwash, to get the poison off of the bottom of my car. Works quite well too, there is almost no rust on the underside of my car, and its been through ten Michigan winters now (copious amounts of salt)

I can't remember ever experiencing issues with seals or the like. I haven't tried the SLE, though. This sounds pretty awful. So, the sunroof actually tries to lift off even though it had been seated properly?

well... it's single digits out, and i don't want salt rusting away at my frame all winter. so... not much choice.

Wow, that would probably have scared the crap outta me!! :eek2:

One of the reasons I don't go through the car wash. There are no good ones around that I would trust - don't want damage to my paint on the Bonneville, and the paint is already going on the Buick, but I have too many add-ons that I'm afraid would get ripped off.

Hey, cold temps have never stopped me from getting out and washing my car, lol!! I even went out one Christmas Eve, many years ago, and hosed the salt off in 18 degree weather!!

our hoses have to be shut off in the winter or they will freeze. the paint will be fine in a touchless wash. unless it's flaking. you wont damage paint with water, even a pressure washer.

My dad's always told me never to go through a touchfree, or any kind of carwash when it's below 25*, due to rapid freezing, which can damage not only paint, but warp brakes and stuff too, in extreme cases.
