HS rocker issues...

Post by superchargedSSEi »

I thought the wear issue had been resolved with the revised HS rocker design...guess is wasn't.

While tearing apart my now broken engine (see this thread http://www.pontiacbonnevilleclub.com/fo ... =11&t=6911), I found my revised 1.6 HS rockers to be heavily worn after ~35k miles. There's a pattern to the wear too. Intake rockers have very light wear (about as expected), while all of the rockers for the exhaust valves show heavy wear from the roller tip digging into the rocker body. Design flaw?

Exhaust (if you look close you can see the alternating wear pattern between exhaust/intake rockers)

Better pics. Rockers are arranged as if they were on the head.

The wear is different on each rocker, but the rockers on the exhaust valves are consistently more worn than those that were on the intake valves. :???:

Did you have any play in the rockers? If I'm seeing what your talking about (little nicks and scratches in roller) That looks like the roller wasn't seated on the valve properly. Or are you talking about something else?

look at the left side of the rockers, you can see where the roller tip ate into the body of the rocker.

I see normal wear in these pics.

The roller is wider than the tip of the valve. If there's damage there that is out of the ordinary, you need to take closer pics. I would also expect to see a difference in appearance between intake and exhaust.

look at this pic, left side of the left most rocker. that is not normal wear.

HS Gen ones were known for the tip eating into the body of the rocker, these have the same issues.

The roller tips are fine, normal wear since the tip is wider than the valve. What I'm talking about is where the roller tip is obviously digging into the rocker body. I did expect to see a little bit of wear on the rocker body since the tip is free to move around. What concerns me though, is that the rocker body on every single one of the exhaust rockers is badly worn, and worn in the same place, while the body on the intake rockers only shows negligible wear for the miles put on them.

danthurs-No play in the rocker arms. There are no nicks or scratches on them either, that's just oil covered dirt and stuff from me handling them that got caught by the flash. I installed these by the book 35k miles ago and hadn't had any issues with them.

I see it now. I was looking at the rollers, not the rocker body. You sure it's not made that way? Looks like a very clean line.

That not what that rocker is supposed to look like.... The Exhaust rockers are worn in a bad way...... Maybe its time for some SLP's or Yella Terra Rockers?

But if they are going to do the same thing, why replace them to have to do it again?

Maybe see if you can get some good macro shots? It is kind of hard to see, except for the aforementioned portion.

The little index dot on the peds.... they are suposed to be facing the valve spring when they are installed. if you have them reversed.. it will do that.
The peds have a slight tilt, thus the reason for the index dot.

Sorry to see this. I'd bet that if yo installed them with the ped orentation correct then they'd still be usable. is the pin in the roller tip loose? if not they may still be fine. although... I'd still send them to HS for evaluation.
