crankshaft pulley wobble

Post by bonnie2000SE »

I have a 2000 se and I recently put all new lifter and pushrods in the block because I thought the knocking was a pushrod. But after doing that and firing it up the knocking noise was still there. Now when I drive the car the knocking noise goes away completely til I have to come to a stop. My question is that is there any way I can get that noise to quiet down or replace small stuff before determining wither or not to just try to drive it 500 miles home the way it is so I can return it to family.

Welcome.

Sounds to me like you have a bad harmonic balancer. You're gonna need to replace that crank pulley.

What you don't really want to do is just start replacing things, you'll have to potential to waste far more money that way.

But you're saying this only makes noise at a stop or idle? I'm thinking the harmonic balancer (crank pulley) may be the culprit. When the HB pulley goes bad it usually intermittently makes noise sometimes a ticking/knocking, sometimes it's more of a squealing. It's not uncommon for the noise to go away with more RPM.

[edit] Just re-read your title , if that pulley is wobbling that's definitely the problem.

HI, LIKE WAS SAID BEFORE, THE hb should be inspected but if the belt stays on all the pulleys, yes you can drive it ( taking it easy).

And if it is the Balancer, you will likely be able to grab the drive belts and rotate them back and forth.

Literally exact same problem i have.

I changed the harmonic balancer and it still makes the noise, so tomorrow im going to try the lifters and pushrods.

Let me know if you figure this out.

Also is your oil pressure normal? rpm normal?
