1 Headlight fail, not bulb

Post by Tanto »

My fiance's car has one headlight not working. She's replaced the bulb, but it's still not working. Her car has had electrical gremlins for years, doing non critical things, but now one headlight refuses to turn on. One of the things adding to the difficulty of troubleshooting is that the car is >1,000 miles away from me.

What else should we be looking for? She's ready to take it to a shop, but they'll probably overcharge her and not permanently fix the issue.

The headlight capsule may need to be removed to give you access. It only takes a 10mm socket wrench to remove 2 bolts. There is a stud in the back end that snaps into the front fender. Then disconnect the connector for the wire harness going to the headlamp capsule to see if it is corroded and inspect the wires for damage. Then using a DMM run continuity tests on the wires from the connector to the bulb socket also see if it is getting 12 volts to the headlamp. Of course the first thing to do is to check the fuse.

If the cause is corrosion, after cleaning up the connection, use di-electric liberally in the connector. I do before it becomes corroded. - BC
