headers; are they worth it!

Talk about modifications, or anything else associated with performance enhancements. Have a new idea for performance/reliability? Post it here. No idea is stupid! (please use Detailing and Appearance for cosmetic ideas)

headers; are they worth it!

Post by deano55 »

After much reading on here and other sites I'm questioning the idea of even putting headers on. I think its ZZP that sell the front custom exhaust manifold and claims a dyno hp increase of 10-11hp. Header manufacturers claim 8-15 hp. So with the average steet car that's not going after 400hp would it not be best to go with the custom manifold, big down pipe and big cat to go along with a good tune, fwi and a 3.8 and ofcourse plugs and stat?

if your goals are not to build an 12 sec car. a home ported from manifold and DP/cat combo is good. Although a cheap set of headers can be bought and you dont have to worry about it.

Zzp priced headers, no. Hp/$ is pretty bad.

I can't say what my headers did on their ow because I did a few things at once, but they sound cool, look cool and make changing plugs easier.

How much of a loss of gas mileage did you have?

It seems easier to change out the front manifold, down pipe and cat then doing headers and trans dipstick

If you do the PLog you need to skew the front injectors.

You chose headers rather than that manifold and down pipe, why?

Headers are more effective for a modestly higher investment(assuming speed daddys).
As to the question of fuel economy, all else being equal, headers will make for more efficiency, thus better economy.

Ok, I 'm seeing that the less expensive headers have only 1 1/2" primaries and the costly headers can have 1 3/4" primaries, it seems to me that 1 1/2" is too small especially if one was to do some porting on the heads.

1 3/4 primaries are big block sizes. You WILL be fine with 1 1/2.

What other mods do you have currently?
