Hit and run... Makes me sick

Post by 99-SLE »

What a great way to start my Thursday...... Walked out to my car and found that I was hit and run overnight. There are some tire tracks from what appears to be a dually truck.....

Those tire tracks seem to me to be in the right spot to have been backed into...

Marks that far up on the hood, I would be looking at a box truck or semi. Are you near any place where a truck may have got off route and tried to turn around?

There's some even farther up. My initial thought was the dumpster bins just inside the entrance might have been emptied, and the garbage truck backed into me. But called the manager of the complex I live in and garbage hadn't been needed to be emptied. Am really irritated.....

Called my Insurance, and am awaiting for a call tomorrow to find out the next step in getting it repaired. I did tell them about the dent that was in the quarter panel already, but it'll probably need replaced regardless. A few gouges in the bumper, so it might need to be replaced. I hope the paint will match fairly closely....

That's awful.

Almost looks like something a tow truck or rollback could have done.

In all fairness, he might not have known that he hit you... I remember a few weeks ago I noticed someone who was pulling into a parking space completely wreck the quarter panel of the car next to her. She got out normally, with a friend in the passenger seat as well, and they both walked into the store without a second glance. I walked over there, took pictures of the damage and waited for the woman to come back. When I stopped her, she had no idea what she did, and denied it until I showed her the matching damage on both cars. She wrote a note with her insurance information and drivers license # and drove off (she said she had to be somewhere... sure. Doesn't that still count as a hit-and-run?) but I still waited for the other driver to come back to brief him on the damage. He was cool with it, but he was really glad I caught her as he only had liability.

Just got a estimate done on my Bonne.... Total damage is over $3800..... There are some issues with me having BC plates, as I was in breach of my insurance, hoping to get everything all sorted out soon. Insurance is trying to call it a total loss already after I told them about the estimate. Waiting on a phone call early next week....

I am not sure if things are different in Canada or not, but if they are pushing to total, then let them, and keep the car. Repair only necessary bits to get it running again, then stash the rest. Would make a good second winter car at this point. You are right, you probably will notice the repair for as long as you own the car, and letting them junk it seems excessive. Kinda seems like the best of both worlds.

I was thinking the repair figure was off as well, as I took a hit with the same affected area by a dog, and damage came in under $1800, but then I remembered the whole Canadia thing, and that probably explains it.

EDIT: Dog incident if interested: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=26765
