New CV Axle & Balljoint and still that sound persists....

Spent last night (literally) replacing the cv axle and balljoint as I believed this was the reason for the "metal rubbing/clicking" sound when turning right at low speeds. It only happens when turning right and not when going down the road straight. Has anybody else had this issue? Ideas? fixes?

How does the sway bar link look? I had a loose one and it was making the noise you're describing.

The sway bar was tightened as well. This is really stumping us here...

Well from the advice of a mechanical friend we are going to try changing the wheel bearings; cross your fingers for me.

Bad wheel bearings create a growl/grinding/hum... not a clicking sound.

However, since you already replaced the CV axle and the balljoint, there isn't much else it could be.

Is there any way you could post a video of it before you tear into it?

Unfortunately no way to post a video. Really it could be classified as a grinding noise. We recently changed the bearings in my trailblazer and thinking back the sounds seem familiar so we'll see how it goes. This trouble shooting is breaking the bank though....I'll keep you posted.

So CV axle, balljoint, rotor, hub bearing assembly and no luck with resolving the noise. We did discover that the rear upper control arm needs replaced though. This car is lucky I like it so much....

I have it on both sides. The last mechanic that had it said there are tabs down on the bottom of the rotor that sometimes rub on things when turning and said you can bend them in and they wont rub.

Do you mean the brake dust shields? We messed with those also.

BF said you were probably talking about the tabs that are in front of the ball joint. He made sure those were clear of touching anything.

Try shaking things before you replace stuff, it will help you to know what you have to replace more accurately. It also saves your wallet. I had this problem before and I thought it was the cv axle til I started shaking stuff under my car. In my case it was a wheel hub that went bad.

For you, I would say check out your tie rod ends, maybe even check to see that the steering rack doesnt move.

I have a little play in the right axle shaft,when i hold it on the inside near the tranny,i can move the wheel about a 1/4 of an inch.

When they are worn out they clunk at low speed, it's very obviously the steering shaft, you can hear it under the dash...

Until my dad greased ours a while back the noise was horrible. Sounded like a bass drum under the dash.

Well it's definately not a sound under the dash. I picked up a new outter tie rod. Keep your fingers crossed

We went to rotate the tires today and noticed that the outter part of the rotor had a light rub mark all the way around the outter rim of it. Any ideas what that would be from? I'm wondering if the rims are the wrong size?? The tires on are 17's but I've noticed on other posts that some people have 16's; could this possibly be the reason?

Stock for these cars is 17". Maybe your rotor is the wrong size? Probably not the case if you only have the problem on one side.

Which wheel bearing did you replace? Assuming this is the source, and you hear the noise when turning right, you would want to replace the driver-side bearing. It's usually the one opposite the direction you are turning when such is the problem.

We verified that the rotors are the correct size. Both sides have had the wheel bearings, cv axles and ball joints replaced. I'm hoping to get some new wheels soon so maybe (fingers crossed) the rim is the issue.
