Re: Whick Brand of Ignition would you use
Posting part numbers is foolhardy at best. There are a number of options to combine into a good replacement for the Magnavox. There really should be no confusion on this. Several dozen members since 2002 have successfully made this swap with any one of 3 or 4 combinations of coils. The ICM can come from any year.

Wouldn't it be nice to post those part numbers so people like me wouldn't be scratching our heads wondering which combinations work, which ones don't and which ones have been the most successful? - BC

Nobody has ever had an issue with it before. When we give the advice (or they simply read the article) they know exactly what to go for.
I'm at a lost trying to figure out where the confusion comes from when we've been about 3x more detailed with your case than we've ever had to before. This isn't rocket science. Get the parts from a car as we described and bolt them on.

Re: Whick Brand of Ignition would you use
Okay. I tried to install the ignition system sent to me and the ICM won't bolt to the ICM bracket I have. I read the instructions written by Jrs3800 again. My question is, would it be best to get the correct bracket and change it, or get the ICM that will fit the ICM bracket from the old Magnavox system? and by the way Bill, sorry, but I do have difficulty grasping things mentally and sorry about it getting "under your skin". I just hope when you get to be an old broken down buzzard like me it doesn't happen to you. I also hope that you can laugh with me when I am self deprecating. lol - BC

Re: Whick Brand of Ignition would you use
Not to step in on this, but I would get the later model bracket. Then the whole deal would be a "bolt-in", right?
I am looking forward to doing the same upgrade on my 94 SE, when I can find reliable parts to do so.
Anyone have the parts I need? Or a reliable source for these parts, besides a junkyard. After all, those cars are in the boneyard for a reason, and I do not wish to "inheret" someone else's problems.
Thanks--Chris

Re: Whick Brand of Ignition would you use
Your 94 already has the Delco ignition and proper bracket with the ICM. The only change for you would be to go to the hotter 97 and newer L67 coils. Nothing else needs to be done.renchjeep wrote:Not to step in on this, but I would get the later model bracket. Then the whole deal would be a "bolt-in", right?

The 92 in question has an older magnavox 'brick' which combined 3 coils into one and had weaker spark voltage and a less reliable ICM. Most of this conversation doesn't relate to your car, rench.

Re: Whick Brand of Ignition would you use
So the ICM is the same as later models, but the coils are hotter. I get it. All I need are the later S2 coils. Anyone have a known good set "laying around"? I just don't trust untested junkyard parts from high-mileage cars.willwren wrote:Your 94 already has the Delco ignition and proper bracket with the ICM. I'd guess that haro has 10 sets of S2 L67 coils.

The bracket for the "brick" Magnavox Ignition System is different than the bracket for the newer ignition system I now have. I located what I think is the correct bracket, but am not sure.

Go get a bracket from a 93-94 Bonneville, LeSabre, Olds 88 or 98, or Park Avenue at the wrecker.

Re: Whick Brand of Ignition would you use
I've been ready this thread and have a question. I have a 96' SE 3800 series II, do I already have the ungraded coil packs? or should a 02' yr swap be in order? Reason asking I am on my second set of igntion wires. For some reason I am burning up ignition wires or it could be I am still getting the OEM wires for my 96'.

Re: Whick Brand of Ignition would you use
Yes. All 3800's since 1993 have had the Delco ICM with 3 individual coils.
Burning out wires does not equal bad coils. Try Belden Premium wires from NAPA. Just be sure to keep the receipt, as some stores won't warranty them w/o it.

Roger that on the receipt. I do think a better quality set of wires would do the job. I'll check em' out and see if they make a difference.

You may get a slight benefit from going to the somewhat-hotter L67 coils from 97 to 03.
