Whick Brand of Ignition would you use

Post by 1oldman »

If you changed your ignition from a Motorola type to an AC Delco style

NAPA Echlin
Borg Warner
KEM
or something else (part numbers too please)

Part numbers I have are:
NAPA Echlin ICM:ECH TP414 (1) Ignition Coils: E51 (3)
Borg Warner ICM: CBE47 (1) Ignition Coils: E51 (3)
KEM Ignition Coils: 342J (3)

Let me know if the part numbers I have are incorrect.
Thanks! - BC

OEM. Go to a wrecking yard and get the coils off of a Series II supercharged car and get the proper ICM and bracket you need. You have seen the techinfo article, correct? This way will get you the best spark and will be the cheapest and best overall. OEM coils are the best, the aftermarkets don't seem to be as good.

$45 max. $10 each for coils and $15 for the ICM. You should be able to get them cheaper though...

Here at the Pick and Pull I get the whole set up for $25.

Check the local JY, even if it is not a P&P they are cheap.

I've got Series II L67 coils and ignition module in excellent shape. They're from a 01 Grand Prix GTP w/82k miles and were all in really nice clean shape when pulled from the motor.
$55 shipped in the lower 48 states.
These are WAAAAAAY better than almost any aftermarket coil/ignition.
They will net you better mpg's, more power, and A LOT more reliability, as well as superior cold starts will be a lot better.

I'd jump on that deal. Those are 2 steps higher in coil voltage than what you have in your car, 1oldman. At that point, you can run the NGK TR55 plugs and gap them at .055".

Sweet deal, Marty. If I needed more, I'd hit it. That setup will work with his current bracket.

Hi Bill. I sent Marty a PM. The car in question is an L27 '92 SSE with a DOM of 11/91. Any way for you to know if it will work or will I need to change the ICM plug and splice it into the wiring harness?

Thanks Bill, Okay, so then it is implied the connector from the old "green monster" will plug directly into the ICM that Marty has, correct? Just wondering as I though that plug changed in later years. - BC

Ok Ed, thanks

Now all I need is to find out everything Marty needs from me. I know he needs at least $55 and where to send it. I need to know where & how to send Marty's $$$$$$.

I know I'm tired of the ICM and coils giving out every 2 to 4 years and taking the O2 sensor & plugs out with them. I didn't have any real issues until the ones that came on the car when it was new failed.- BC

There is no 'correct' number for any of them.

What year and engine did they come out of? There's 3 freaking types since your car was built. When you say 'I have' does that mean you have those PARTS? Or you found those part numbers?

Well, 1st, It's a '92 engine code L (L27) and has an old Motorola ignition system on it.
2nd, I'm trying to "upgrade" to a "better" system (AC Delco) at someone's suggestion (wonder who that was?).
3rd, I have found NEW AC Delco parts at an extremely good price. Twice the price of used parts. $14 for each set of coils, $45 for the ICM. That's less than $90 for the entire setup.
4th, the question is will these part numbers work together on the old "green monster"?

I paid for a "good" used set of ignition coils, ICM, and bracket, but haven't seen or heard hide nor hair from the seller since.

But, I believe almost all this info in already in this thread.

I haven't forgotten what I suggested. Your last post was so vague, we had no way of knowing any of this. It sounded like you had those PARTS in your hands and wondered if they would work together.

Again, what year AND engine format are the parts coming from? I don't have the time to start researching part numbers for you when you can actually answer the question for all of us since you have the numbers already.

I guess I don't understand what you want to know. I looked up the parts and did the parts check on the suppliers web sites. The part numbers I posted came from the supplier web sites. All say that the ICM will work, but half say the Delco coils will not work with the AC Delco ICM while the others say the Delco coil packs will work with the Delco ICM. The current Ignition is a Motorola system ( 1 ICM and 1 coil pack with 3 coils I think - 1 pack takes all 6 plug wires). It's an early model L27 in an early model '92 SSE. I think I'm rubbing off on you Bill. lol!!!!!!!!! - BC

Plain and simple: Marty told you they came of an 01 GTP, which makes them the hotter S2 L67 coils. If you knew Marty like I know Marty, you'd do the swap blindfolded using a toothpick as a tool, and you'd have confidence in the work and the parts.

Everything we've told you in this topic is that they are the best choice. I'm not sure where your confusion lies. Unless you trust websites more than our years of experience?

As usual, you didn't get the point of the question. May I help you remove the burr from under your saddle? - LOL! - BC

EDIT: Okay, with the info Bill gave me, for future reference in case anyone else wants to get rid of their "crappy" Motorola ignition system and you can't get the parts from a JY, I believe the correct part numbers are:
(1) AC Delco ICM D1977A
(3) AC Delco Ignition Coil Pack No. D576

If I'm wrong, I'm sure & hope Bill will let me know - LOL!!!! - BC
