Bought a 5 speed Classic XJ Jeep

Post by 2000Silverbullet »

I've always wanted a manual Jeep and this beater's price was right. If it lasts thru the winter I'll be impressed.
It's a clone to my other Jeep Cherokee but in way worse shape. No mudflaps so lower quarter panel rot is extensive. :angry7: but the mechanicals are very good, other than a leaking steering gear and 320,000 kms.

It will probably be sold to a young man I am related to.

I was bored and needed another project.

Looking pretty good! Always fun to have an older vehicle to tinker with.

Could do "rock-slider" rockers with some steel. They wouldn't rust on you, and would be functional.

Purchased for $600. It runs very strong and has a good transmission and clutch. The engine was recently checked for compression and all cylinders are within 10 psi.
I installed some new plugs, wires did some fluid changes yesterday. Runs as good as my other Jeep and is way more fun with the gears. Actually burns rubber.......cause it doesn't have a limited slip like my other one.
I tried the 4WD high and low and both work very well.

The tires are good except for one that has a slow leak.

I ordered a patch panel and bought some new fog lights for it.

Will be installing new rear shocks today and tearing off the back bumper.

Pics to come.

Time to get busy with the new shocks and fog lights.

I popped in a new radio cassette player cause the original didn't work. I used to have the cassette deck in my old Jeep before I upgraded to a CD deck. I have some old cassettes but at least the radio works like new.

This Jeep has the standard suspension, unlike my other Jeep that has the off road heaviest duty springs and Bilstein shocks. I removed the rusted out rear shocks and cleaned things up. Brakes are new all around. Rotors were recently replaced. My biggest challenge will be the right rear lower quarter panel replacement. The body shops around here won't touch it so I'll have to improvise. :bhuh:

The old fog lights are rusted on pretty good. I think I'll have to cut them off with my dremel. Broke my swivel in half trying. :angry4:

Had a bear of a time removing the wheel lugs. They must have been impacted on and not lubbed at all. I always lube my nuts. Hehehe.

I haven't got any plates on it yet.

This weekend was our annual Blackberry festival here in town. Last night we were partying in the streets and today was the big show n shine. I didn't enter anything. It's a very small town event. There were about 25 cars there newest being an SS Camaro and SRT Challenger. Nothing spectacular. I stayed for 10 minutes and then went home to clean up more on the Jeep. Darn, the rear hatch lock does not work and the auto door locks are all toast. All the power windows work though. :)

It was an original owned vehicle that was well maintained by a couple of teachers who didn't have any children. The only accident it ever had was when he backed into a post and dented the rear bumper.
That was a key factor in purchasing this Jeep.

What he failed to tell me is that it cracked the rear hatch and loosened up the rear window molding which leaked into that right rear quarter and rotted it out.

I sealed up the window so it won't leak anymore. The floor pans are rust free. :)

What about Xpel or Lamin-X films for the fogs? Then they're less vulnerable to thrown rocks. That film withstood an impact from a heavy chunk of metal on my fiancee's Honda. Instead of shattering, the light held together and works just fine after that hit. Well worth the $10 we spent on it.

Ohhh this truck has been off road alright. There is a chunk out of the trani bellhousing but it's not serious. Both rear bumpstops were destroyed. Too bad it never had mudflaps. That's the main reason for the rust on the lower panels and rear bumper. Huge accumulations of mud that created the cancer.

I spent a lot of time cleaning it up the last few days. Hit the jackpot today at the local scrap yard.

Image

This Laredo met its maker.....and provided me with many good parts, cheap!
Notice it's missing it's wheel well flares.....

Image

Image

Got some good bump stops and a clock that works too.

Changed the transfer case fluid. It takes 2 liters of trani fluid. I had to buy a 30 mm socket to remove both plugs with a 3 foot long 1/2" drive. It's been rebuilt before as evidenced by the paint and sloppy sealant.

Image

Cracked open the Dana rearend. It's been changed before but needed some freshening. 3.08 gearset looks very good and all gear teeth intact.

Image

Image

Tomorrow the fibreglassing will begin. It's gonna be an ugly job. :angry7:

Image

Image

The patch panels should be here on Thursday........and so will Chynna! She's in Vancouver tonight at the PNE. Work will slow down for the next week while she and her boyfriend are visiting. :beerchug:

Rear end is buttoned up and filled with 75W-140. Front axle is draining. It looks like it's been a while since changed but again from evidence of red silicone sealant, it was done before.

Great clouds of rust dust has been flying most of the morning. I haven't got this dirty in a long time.
I decided to pull the rear carpet and......no surprise, found another couple small rust holes. Bought some Kitty hair fibreglass and will do some patching this afternoon. Both rockers have holes about 4" long x 1" wide. :angry7: Well I expected it.

Chowing down some lunch after my second shower of the day.......pics later.

Now I know why I don't drive my Bonne or Bird in the salt and rain.

.....not as bad as my old 74 International though. That was held together with rivets and sheet metal.

Laurs dragged me away for dinner and a couple of beer.....oh and some wine. She pickled 5 jars of garlic, mmmmmm.

Here's the pics for today. I decided to lift the rear carpet and :angry7: cancer is evident but not too bad. I'll get some roofing tar tomorrow and seal it good.
A couple more holes will be filled.

The front axle cover is drying overnight. I hate using the quick dry paint. It gives me a headache and doesn't protect as well as the slow dry Tremclad rust paint.
