95 SSEi trans failure

Post by robds5 »

The other day driving home, I went to pass a slow car. My car kicked down and sped up no problem. When I got around the other car and went to slow down a bit, I didn't seem to have any power. I pulled over, checked fluids etc, and everything seemed fine. When I went to pull away to drive agan, the car would not go. The only way I had any gear was to put the car in 1st. The car will not shift into any other gear. I have checked linkage and eveything seems fine. Any ideas? Would it need a complete tranny rebuild?

Most likely a rebuild will be in your cards...

Chances are from what you described the trans may have popped a lip seal or an o ring, or lost a thrust washer...

If you shift manually from manual 1-manual 2 will the trans shift?

No it will not shift. The car has sat for a few days now. It rolled back out the driveway, and went for a short drive. It went in drive for about 1/4 mile driving slow. Then did the same thing again.

Anyone know what acomplete rebuild might cost? The car is getting old and only worth so much.

1200-1600 depending....

Hard to tell you what to do... I rebuilt the one for my van about 20,000 miles ago... The failure was about the same as yours... I spent $650 in parts alone... Parts will generally run $600-800
