Talk about modifications, or anything else associated with performance enhancements. Have a new idea for performance/reliability? Post it here. No idea is stupid! (please use Detailing and Appearance for cosmetic ideas)

L67 Rebuild, Which pistons are you guys using?

Post by 2KSexsei »

I am currently rebuilding a L67 out of a 2000 SSEi, I see in signatures different pistons are being used, but can't seem to find where to buy? I am boring the engine .030 over and would like to know what you guys think I should put in it. I will probably do a cam, rockers, and maybe an IC in the future. Thanks for the help.

I used the L32 Powdered Metal Rods when I rebuilt my L67 last year. Working great!

Here's Intense's Hardcore engine page, they sell Diamond pistons. Not sure on the price, though. Over $100 each, ouch.

Go forged.
They are more expensive but are much stronger than powdered. The OEM pistons are powdered and they will break under high loads and cycles. Powdered are better than cast but forged are the best.

Paul, stock L67 pistons are forged, not powdered. S3 rods are powdered, S2 timing gears are powdered, but not the pistons.

I am not going for a ton of power, my main goal is consistency. I am not really worried about E.T. or insane trap speeds. I am not looking to build a high dollar balls out engine, just looking for somewhere to start. I know the engine will be way way low compression for alcohol, but i don't want to have to worry about smashing valves either..

00Beast, The wallet isn't very deep at the time being, I modeled up the chassis for the rail using solidworks and have sent the Material list for the chromoly to a couple race shops around, and have located a transmission I can borrow for next summer. So, I guess I will see where I am at for an engine budget at that point. A buddy and I are currently in the process of writing up a prgram for the CNC lathe to notch the pipes(because we are lazy like that).

Funny, I read somewhere that they were. :???: That and the thin land area above the top ring contribute to the breaking around the top perimeter like yours and many others have.

So not only metallurgy but actual design of the piston makes a big difference.

Not to change the topic here, but I just bought a complete L67 with 80k on it, the shop I bought it from says it has a bad bottom end. The blower was bought from GM less than 5K ago. I paid $300 for it.. Think I did good? or is that high?

Not a bad deal, considering a new S/C is expensive.

About what does the blower run if a guy were to go to the dealership to get it?

Just curious as to why you are running a 6 in a rail car? I know its different and all that.

First off, just to be the oddball. Second, these engines are extremely reliable, and in the world where being dead on run after run is all that matters.. It's great.

It is going to be awhile before I get anywhere on it. I am being sidetracked and spending my free time working on a program to produce an intercooler plate similar to the one the W body store sells.. :)
