The main benefit is improved filtering. One free mod is the Gutted air Box. Basically, you cut the airbox apart with a saw, making sure not to cut out the bottom, where the PCM mounts, or where the filter seals to.

If you really want an FWI, save the $60 you'd spend on a K&N Drop-in and when you get the rest, get an Intense FWI.

Took me under an hour, including the removal, dissassembly and re-installation. The cutting was the easy part.

There might be some. Just cut the front out, basically. You can also cut the inside, where it blocks over half of the filter. Just be careful and don't cut too much. I also used a sawzall with a metal bit. A dremel with the right bit, or a die grinder, etc., will also work.

Gutting the airbox makes a difference. I wouldn't worry about getting a K&N drop-in. Once you open up the area the car breathes through it likely lowers the pressure differential across the filter enough that a paper element will flow just as much air as your engine can use.

Plus you can seal the front of the box to the fender (at least on the old generation) to make a poor man's CAI.
