Code P0742 Torque Converter

Post by beachbum »

I had the trouble code P0742 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Stuck On. Has anybody had this code before? What is the fix for this since I am not an expert with the automatic transmission on my 2000 SSEi? I'm not sure where to even start looking for this. Thanks for any and all help on this.

These are the aids to diagnose the problem. As the switch is in the valve body, under the side cover, much of it may be beyond what you want to tackle.

* Inspect the connectors at the controller, the component and all other circuit connecting points for an intermittent condition. Refer to Testing for Intermittent and Poor Connections in Diagrams.
* Inspect the circuit wiring for an intermittent condition. Refer to Testing for Electrical Intermittents in Diagrams.
* Rapid fluctuation in line pressure could set DTC P0742.
* An open condition in the TCC release circuit or switch would set DTC P1887. Open circuits are not diagnosed in DTC P0742.
* Inspect for a pressure regulator condition.
* Inspect for abnormal line pressure.
* The customer may notice an engine stalling condition.

Hey Archon,
Thanks for the prompt response! You are an ace on this page and a wonderful person. I will go through the list and let you know what I find. By the way, I bought a can of Sea Foam Trans Fluid and dumped 1/2 of the can in and ran the car for more than 5 miles and did not have any problems so that might have taken care of it. If it is intermittent, I will check the wiring. Thanks again.

It very well could have solved your problem. Could have been a sticky solenoid that was cleaned out by the solvents in the Trans Tune.

The Trans Tune often does wonders, but sometimes it is only a temporary solution. However, if it does happen again...I wouldn't tear into things just yet, other than inspecting the wiring just to be sure.

If you can, put the entire can in even if it overfills it a touch. Run it for a few days, then drop the pan and change the fluid and filter. Throw in a bottle of the Lucas Transmission fix when you change the fluid.

Always happy to help out. :)
