New Project: 1970 Blazer

Post by JimmyFloyd »

When looking for a new project, i was having ADD. I wanted a truck to make moving and hauling stuff easier. I wanted 4x4 so that I could go play in the mud if i wanted. At the same time, I wanted to have a convertible to drive around in as I missed riding in my roommate's old 66 Impala SS conv. I also wanted something that would retain some of it's value, which was mainly classics.

Over the past month or two I have looked at many different vehicles, rangine from 91 Cutlass convertibles, 64 cutlass sedans, 97 bonnevilles, 68 chevy trucks, 89 chevy trucks, 95 f150's and many more inexpensive project vehicles. I didn't want to spend too much, and was looking to spend between $500-1500 depending on the vehicle.

Well, As with many projects, I found one that fit all my needs, but just outside of my planned budget, but still within reason. It was also much further along than the rest of the ones i was looking at, which were restoreable candidates.

So here is the new project:

Image

1970 Chevy Blazer. This is the Full Convertible model with the top coming off at the windshield frame. It was originally a 6 cyl, but was swapped to a 350 at some point. The 350 had been recently rebuilt, but has not been run more than 5 hours total. The truck has the 4 speed with granny gear, and a brand new clutch. There is a NP205 transfer case there for the 4x4 as well. It has all new braking system on it, including lines, drums, rotors, pads, master cyl, booster, etc. Front disk, rear drum. The rear is a 12 bolt, but unsure of the gearing. The truck was optioned with Heavy duty clutch, suspension, power steering, passenger seat, and top.

Now, it looks like a piece, but the metal work is done already, and really straight. The tail gate could use to be replaced or re-finished. There is no bondo in it. The previous owner replaced the rockers, rocker boxes, floors, and quarters. The Windshield frame looks good, just a little surface rust to remove and then paint.

The truck runs and drives under it's own power, with a little help. There is no gas tank or key ignition installed, so it runs off a timing switch and gas can, but it drives and sounds nice.

The things that I know it needs right now are as follows:

Gas tank kit ($250 shipped)
Shocks ($100 at Advance)
Rear hatch ($300 includes full top and spare blazer [need to talk about this bill])
bumper brackets
Rims and tires
rear seat (Not that important. see rear hatch)

It included a box of new replacement parts with an invoice of $500, as well as a bunch of other spare parts, and original parts to replace them.

All in all it's a good start, especially since it'll keep me busy doing stuff without having to spend tons of money on it. Hoping that I can get it on the road before NEBF.

I am contemplating on trying to use some of the spare bonneville parts I have to do the interior, and I need to figure out something for the stereo, but those shouldn't be too bad. Might need to try my hand at fiberglassing some speaker mounts at NEBF.

All in all I am very excired and feel I got a good deal. Carlisle Spring Swap Meet is later this month, and I am going that friday with my list of needs in hand.

AAWWWWWWW!!!! I want a first gen Blazer/Jimmy sooooo bad! They are truely BadAss! I had an '82 K5 and a '94 2-door Yukon, Im def a fan of the fullsize 2 door carry-alls. There is a first gen running around locally(not sure of the year), bright orange paint, 36s, and a supercharged smallblock. I love how they look with the tops off! Looks surprisingly solid. Most around here suffer from cancer and there's no base to start with. Good luck!

Jimmy, go to 67-72chevytrucks.com and join. I'm ed2552 over there, and there are a lot of members (over 60k) there to help you, and there's a specific section for the early Jimmys and Blazers.

What does the SPID say? (Service Parts Identification Decal, inside Glove box door) It should list all options. If you wouldn't mind, take a pic and post it up here.

Very cool. I have an '89 Blazer myself (Full size, of course), and previously owned an '85. I love those trucks.

I got a great idea last night. What do you guys think?

As for the SPID, it is a very low-optioned blazer.

V6
Heavy Duty clutch
Heavy duty front suspension
Heavy duty aux seat
power steering
white top
red exterior
red vinyl

Sounds like it was built up for plowing to me. No frills, that's for sure. Probably going to be kept minimalist for now.

And I am over on that site under this name.

I like the AL7 idea. It came factory with a V6? That's awesome. The GMC V6 was a great little motor. That truck also isn't going to keep up on the freeway. First gear is 7:1, and 4th is 1:1, and the rear end I'm sure is 4.10. It's going to be great for towing, but not so good down the freeway. Just some words of wisdom from a fellow 67-72 owner.

So I have the option to get some seats out of a 2000 SLE. unheated, and am thinking about it for the fact that they have the shoulder belts attached to them, rather than justthe lap belts of the AL7's. Only thing better would be the heated seats, but that could be added later I guess.
