Transmission won't upshift from 2nd gear

Two days ago I backed my 02 SE out of my drive way and when I shifted into D the trans wouldn't shift into gear, it just free-revved, but I could tell it wasn't in nuetral. I put it in nuetral, then back into D and it slowly engaged. I started driving slowly down the road and I could tell it was slipping a little. After about 1/4 mile or so it felt normal. I had to drive about 15 to 20 miles to my first job for the day and it seemed to work fine. I drove home at the end of the day and it still worked OK. About an hour later I drove it to a friends house, again about 20 miles away, and before I got half way there I noticed it wouldn't upshift out of 2nd. 1st and 2nd felt fine; it went into first from nuetral or park OK, and it upshifts from 1st to 2nd ok, it just won't upshift any further. While driving, I also tried shifting to nuetral, then into 3; I also tried shifting manually through the gears but no change.

The trans had to be repaired by a shop on the Spring of 04 because a planetary geear was self-destructing. that was about 100k miles ago. I have 159k now. I know I should have changed the F & F sooner but I didn't.

I've seen a few posts for other issues recommending changing the fluid and filter and using Seafoam TransTune, doing a fluid & filter change again and then using Lucas TransFix. I think I'm going to try this but I have 2 questions; 1. Am I wasting my time consider the problem/ and 2. How much trans fluid will I need for each refill?

There's no way to tell if the Trans Tune, fluid and filter change will help or not. Only way to find out is to try it. It's cheaper than a tranny rebuild. You'll need just short of 8 quarts for each change.

Well, I decided to park it for now. It's still too cold outside to work on it in my unheated garage. It needs a rest anyway.
