my neighbor has a 1994 park ave with 147k on it..

he has recently developed a issue where his car will not run longer then 15-20 minutes then it will stall out and die, then it wont restart unless he waits about 2 or 3 hours.. as long as he waits it will start right up.. if he tries to restart it as soon as it dies it will try to turn over but it wont..

he paid almost $450 to 3 differnt shops and all he got was ( you got old gas in your car.)
swapped the gas and still the same issue..

can anybody help me help my neighbor.. i cant stand to see old people get taken advantage of like that..

i would really apperictae it..

i was thinking ignition coil pack or maybe maf..? not sure..

Any codes? I'm thinking about parts that can be affected by heat. Fuel pump, FPR, MAF, coil pack, ICM, crank sensor. Although a bad MAF would probably let it start, but then die after a moment.

During a time when it won't start, push the relief on the fuel rail test port with the key off. Anything more than a small spurt? Try holding it in while someone tries to start the car. Yes, be prepared for fuel... If a 94 still has the fuel pump prime lead above the battery, try that to see if the pump runs. I don't suppose you have access to a fuel pressure gauge?

Perhaps you can swap the coils and ICM from your car just to see if it helps.

no codes at all.. but honestly his check engine light does not come on or light up at all.. not even while starting the car..

but i fixed the problem by replacing the icm with a spare i had and it ran for an hour straight with a consistint idle.

but i also noticed his car was back firing since he got it back from his mechanic.. and was louder..

i look under the car only to see his catco hanging by a coat hanger and was cut off and put back on with out being welded..

so i took it off to put it back together correctly with solme clamps and peices of connector pipe but to my suprise i found out they the shop he took his car to gutted out his catco...

now if you tell the client its bad gas then why would you even need to touch the catco..?

the darn theifs took his platnium from his catco and tries to put ot back like nothing happened...

now his exhaust scrapes on the floor when backing into my garage.. :-# im at a loss for words.. they really screwed this guy over..

That sucks!

Unfortunately, for every decent hard-working mechanic out there, there's a hack or a crook making them all look bad. I've never seen any polls, but I imagine that the average person ranks auto mechanic just above lawyer in their level of distrust. I'm not saying that either is necessarily warrented, but that seems to be the general perception.

So, I take it that you've helped this guy out and that the problems are resolved for now. He certainly needs to get a hi-flow cat in there. Maybe you can pick up a used one reasonably.
