Car shifts smoothly in all gears. Once it gets into overdrive around 45-50 car starts to jerk, buck, shake etc. Rpms are at 1500 at this mph. If we use the shifter just below overdrive it locks out overdrive and drives fine but of course RPMs soar over 2000. Fluid needs to be changed as we do not know when it was done and is not a Rosy red anymore. It doesn't smell burnt but appears to be getting old. That is my first thing to do. Would a worn CV joint cause this? We just replaced the master cylinder as it was leaking but it leaked down to the boot and melted the boot and seeped into it. Also it started all of a sudden a vibration when braking on the front drivers side wheel and a vibration when turning to the right. Started right after master cylinder change. I'll probably take back to mechanic as it might be related. We just replaced the hub bearing on that about 2K ago. Also no codes are showing. Any ideas other than a shot tranny which may be the original.

You have a misfire. It's more evident in overdrive than any other gear. This is the most likely culprit. Check your plugs and wires. Pull all 6 and inspect them, it should be obvious. It's best to post a pic of them, but keep them in order so you know what came from where.

If that isn't it, we'll take it from there.

This is most likely an ignition problem. Check your plugs/wires/coils

EDIT: willwren and his sneaky fastness #-o

Ok I'll check that out. Wires were replaced about 6 months ago, the second set in a little over 18 months as the last set failed and caused misfire at idle. Maybe it's a simple thing.

What kind of wires were you using?

New set of GM wires from the dealer.

I did a preliminary check of the boots and wires and everything checks out. Next is to spray some water mist at night and see if I have arching. Then I'll pull plugs one by one. Car runs great and powerful until it hits overdrive and it will not go over 1500 RPM and speed will not increase even if the pedal is to the floor.

I'm probably going to check them as well. I am a pro at checking them as I have had this misfire problem too many times but haven't had it in overdrive.

Cat is only about 6 months old as well. Fuel pressure should be good as we have replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump, and FPR about 2 years ago. It is just a matter of taking the car off the daughter long enough to do the tests! I haven't first hand experienced it but I will be taking the car to work on Monday as I have to drop my car off at the dealer for state inspections. I'll be sure to have my scanner with me to see the live data.

P.S.

Something just hit me. Car sat for about 2 months so it could be water condensation in the tank. I'll throw in some drygas for good measure!

Was experiencing something similar and replaced one of the engine/trans mount. mount had "sogged" out and was allowing the engine to walk especially in overdrive after the last shift on the highway. like you said, 45-50mph

Well it is now doing it when overdrive is locked out (by shifter) and going 45-50. So it definitely sounds like a misfire problem. I still can't get car off daughter yet to test it. My guess is that a coil is crapping out.

When I experienced this problem in my 95 it was the plugs, all of them for the most part. t the time my car had the original plugs still in it and was at 98K miles... some time ago. I found my plugs were at 085. After installing a new set mine was running great again. I just noticed the 94 I just got is doing this... didn't notice this when I test drove it. Plugs/Ignition is were I'm gonna start looking.

Good luck :)

Ok I had car today and here is my report. I added a can of dry gas a few days ago and this may or may not have solved this problem.

The car behaved well for me with no hesitation or bucking as my daughter explained. Trans and engine were well coordinated and plenty of power so I rule that out. I did notice something in suspension causing a shake that starts around 45-50 and fads around 55-60. To me it feels like unbalanced tires. That makes sense as we just rotated the tires and they probably haven't been done for many years. There is something going on in front driver's side suspension, which I suspect the CV joint is starting to go. Not making noise other than a slight clunk when turning left under acceleration, classic sign. Plus when master cylinder was leaking it leaking through the boot. Daughter is taking back to mechanic. It could be a brake issue, possibly with caliper on that side as it seems as if the caliper may be moving as when you just come to a complete stop you feel some weird grabbing/moaning sensation.
