This is all the info you should need for these stereos (or similar), hack and slash at your own risk.... (This is another case where the evil chainsaw smiley would come in handy, but I'll make do without) :bazooka:

After I got my first mp3 player I wanted to listen to my music in the car. But tape adapters suck and RF emitters blow. :btruestory:
I was limited (for a long time) to headphones. I then found out how to add a line in to the '86-'92 delco stereos that had the tape deck. It was simple: fool the stereo into thinking the tape was in the player and have a switch to choose between a line in and the tape deck. These are my old .jpg files with the info. This applies to most '86-'92 stereos that had the standard tape deck:
Image

Then, I scored a 5-band equalizer head unit from a '89 Caddy and wanted to do the same: problem was that it had the blaupunkt (spelling?) tape deck. I had a fix for that:
Image

I switched to a head unit from a '97 chevy with more simplistic bass and treble knobs for more power...(50w instead of 25w or something like that) but it took me longer to crack this one. This is all done at home with a pair of cheap ear buds, a DMM, and some level of competence...(not too much ;) ). You can find similar at fleabay, but I think those use the old trick the tape deck method, which on these stereos will kill the deck/player because they have to be on in order for the stereo to use that input line. This applies to most of this generation of stereo, with the exception of something special I'll show later...

This picture is the schematic for the newer style stereos. The audio input device, black is ground and green is right and blue is left. The jack in the picture is backwards..

Notice: The RF module (this is the bottom of the PCB) pins that are highlighted? Look close, there is also a close-up of what you will do:
Image
Image

Those highlighted traces are the audio signal from the RF module thingymabob that the antenna wire plugs into. I chose here to inject the signal from my line in. Use a dremel tool cutter to waste those traces, and connect the wires as shown in the pic below and the schematic above:

After a few iterations of speakers and head units, I now use the 7-band equalizer head unit that AFAIK is a special unit unique to the grand prix (Infinity speakers in dash holes, infinity in all 4 doors, tweeters in front doors, and Pioneer 4-way in the rear  ). It's got two amps instead of the single amp found in the stereos above (1 each for left and right). I had to trace the audio signal from each amp all the way back to the input chip as the RF module was significantly different. I lack as many needed picks, but should be easy enough to find the right spot with these:

And there you have it! I can now use my Zune to listen to Taylor Swift...I mean Aerosmith.........I mean Metallica (Yeah?!...crap, busted) whenever I want to! The sound is as clean as the source is, though I recommend re-wiring to use shielded speaker wires.
:bband: :discomonkey:

Opinion warning: I hate aftermarket stereos...they are no more powerful than stock except rare cases. Stock blends in, fits the hole without gaudy adapters, produce clear sound, and you don't have to take your eyes off the road to increase the volume or change the station... The only thing Delco did wrong was paper speakers and unshielded wiring...and lack of flashy lighting....and lack of tweeters.....and lack of subs.....and.......

Another short circuit to my brain...lol It's cool that you know how to do this kind of stuff. I can also say first hand that the system in your LeSabre is pretty good.

Nice, Matt! Should help a lot of guys out. I still need to figure out why my radio tap(From Will) has alternator whine and other weird noises. I can hear my texts coming in my car speakers like I used to when I played guitar and left my phone on my amp when I was jamming out.

It always did that Carl. Even with a legit tape (yes I tried once). No clue why, but the iPod adapter seemed to have it worse. Just gotta turn up the volume. ;) :poke:

It has to be a wiring issue somewhere.

Idk. Steve knows what he's doing when it comes to radio wiring. He's done it forever. :dontknow: Maybe it needs a filter somewhere.

If you're getting noise, the line in likely is wired to use the wrong ground.
