It uses an analog output from the potentiometer and the car reads the 1-5 volt or 4-20 mililiamp signal and translates that from empty to full.

:btruestory: if I get the ECU tuned for E85, can I still run regular gas without an issue?

You would run pig rich and probably have a bit too much timing.

In regards to the fuel level sender, buoyancy dictates that it (the float) will rest at different levels based on the specific gravity of the fuel. The Dead Sea has a 16% higher specific gravity (than water) so anyone can float on top of it

How do flex fuel cars do it? They somehow sense the type of fuel they are running?

Seth, don't. It's not worth it, and once we get rid of the Ethanol subsidies, it's going to be supar frigging expensive.

It may affect where the gauge floats, Myche, but it will be accurate from there, and I'd assume the factory gauge isn't that precise anyways, to matter.

They see x amount of knock and drop from thier e85 tune to the regular fuel tune.

Same as the tuning in your GXP , its designed to run premium , however if it sees x amount of knock it drops down to 87 oct tuning.

I'd assume it's knock as well as the O2's and demanded fueling rate.

I think I am going to actually have to agree with you. It is not worth it for a na car.

Thanks for everyone's opinions.

Actually, yes, now I can understand what you mean. :beerchug: No hard feelings, was trying to help and honestly didnt get what you were trying to get at.

But do not get a tune or anything for 85 unless you are boosted to the hilt or running insane compression. Cost versus usage just does not calculate in your favor.

It doesn't matter if you have fuel, water or Dead Sea salt water in your tank, a float is a still a float. It FLOATS on top of the surface, it has nothing to do with the composition of what its floating on. It has nothing to do with specific gravity. The float rides the surface of the liquid.

It does not float on top of the surface; it will displace a portion of the fluid of equal weight. Just hit the tackle box and throw a bobber in a glass of water. Then repeat with very salty water. There will be a difference

While techincally correct, the very slight differnces in specific gravity between fuels will not have any meaningful effect on the depth at which the float floats. let alone any difference in how the guage reads.

On a perfectly accurate float of known displacement using precise measuring equipment, you might see a difference, but there's way too much fudge in the factory system to make any kind of difference that you will notice.
