My initial thought was something in the power delivery, like a loose cable, ground, or funky ignition switch. That would be pretty easy to confirm or rule out. |

He shouldn't have the dash torn out for the ignition switch. You remove the cover and it comes out pretty easily, IIRC? IIRC, the ign. switch bezel comes ... |

... Then I'd go for it. $1000 leaves you with plenty of cash for parts. An ignition switch is easy to replace---assuming that's actually the issue. |

Neutral safety switch is a possibility, it could also be the ignition switch itself. |

Could be a bad PCM with that many errors happening, it could very well be you have a worn out ignition switch as well. Try manipulating the key when you are seeing everything happening. Might not be able to do much , but you might find that you have enough play that the contacts are intermittent. |

The fact that there was a problem with only starting in neutral makes me think that there may be a problem in the transmission position switch. A scanner would be helpful in diagnosing this. The ignition switch doesn't know or care what gear the car is in. It just gives a crank signal to the PCM. |
