Re: 88 LE 112k - runs rough on freeway-FIXED!!!

In case the edit doesn't bump it to the top.

Replaced the driver's axle and it fixed everything. Huge thanks to an incredible group of people on the forum. THANK YOU! :)

Fixes include: Plugs, Wires, ECM, Coil Pack, Upgraded Vacuum Modulator, O2 sensor and driver's axle. Like a rebuilt car! Thanks ...

Re: ALDL OBD1 - how to configure Freescan for my ECM (122825

Hey Matt,

Thanks for your help. I tried WinALDL and had trouble getting data to flow. I can re-try. EFILive no longer provides an evaluation license - (I believe v8 was just released) and $200 is pricey at this stage. I sent an email to Andy about Freescan - hope he checks in once in a while.

I ...

ALDL OBD1 - how to configure Freescan for my ECM (1228253)

Hi everyone,

I recently bought an ALDL cable - 12 pin to USB. Of the several affordable or free software packages I found, only Freescan would establish a communications link between my laptop (running Freescan) and the ECM.

I've confirmed my ECM is Serial # 1228253 and I have access to the ...

Re: 88 LN3 Vin C Still runs rough under load

SuperH, thanks for that. I'm using Freescan as it's the only OBD1 package that I could establish the datastream with. I need to clock more time plugged in but your post is a HUGE help and a step forward and thanks again.

edit: I only ran into one reference to a loose TC bolt causing vibration. Also ...

Re: 88 LN3 Vin C Still runs rough under load

Hey Zeik, thanks for that. I checked the injectors with a stethoscope and they're all working.

I have a question. I ran into info that suggested a loose torque converter bolt can cause an imbalance. My torque converter seal was replaced just under two years ago. The vibration started a few months ...

Re: 88 LN3 Vin C Still runs rough under load

Thanks J Wikoff, I saw the clips don't slide back so that helps. I warmed the car up, put a screwdriver against each injector and using a stethoscope, listened for service and all six sound like they're working. I did think I noticed a little bit of variation in what sounded like strength. Do ...

Re: 88 LN3 Vin C Still runs rough under load

Thanks crash - I will go do that. I'm concerned about unplugging injectors, having never done it before and I hear they can be expensive to replace. Any "bewares" I should be ware of? :)

Re: 88 LN3 Vin C Still runs rough under load

Zeik - That's what the guy at the trans shop said... valve or spring - drive it to death, but he didn't suggest replacing the vacuum modulator (which I did and got a huge performance boost out of it) for $ 13.00 usd.

SuperH - the filter is about two years old but I've been wondering about the ...

Re: 88 LE 112k - runs rough on freeway

Hey Grant :) Thanks for that. I took a look and the magnet was fine. I started a new updated post on this thinking it would be simpler. The fact is I had a transmission failure last week and I think that's the problem. Something in the valve body. I'm looking into rebuilding that at the moment, so I ...

Re: 88 LN3 Vin C Still runs rough under load

It's the transmission. Had it on the freeway today and, at speed, put it in neutral (it slowed noticeably, rather than coasted) and when I put it back into gear, there was no connection. Not in drive, or 3rd or 2nd or 1st. I coasted off the freeway and managed to slide into a small lot. When I put ...

Re: 88 LN3 Vin C Still runs rough under load

Hi guys - sorry to delay getting back to you, I forgot to subscribe to the topic. fixed.

A little clarification - could be important. When the car is warm and I'm stopped at a light, the idle stumbles. It's not rough or anything like it, but it's definitely not smooth. Then there's the roughness at ...

Re: 88 LN3 Vin C Still runs rough under load

Hi Grant - thanks for the encouragement.

Magnet's good. Completely intact and still holding a strong magnetism when I put a small screwdriver near it. I replaced the Cam Sensor but I haven't road tested it yet.

You know, the symptom does remind me of something like a magnet going around the cam ...

Re: 88 LN3 Vin C Still runs rough under load

Hi again Grant,

Sorry to sound so peevish on my last post :/ I'm going to do a visual check as soon as I can get to it. The roughness I get is a very rapid pulse - like once per revolution of the crank - that's partly what leads me to the magnet also. It's gotten worse over the last couple of ...

Re: 88 LN3 Vin C Still runs rough under load

Hi Grant - thanks for your help :)

I had a code 42 set before I replaced the ignition module but it's gone now. (I learned how to jump A and B and retrieve codes recently)

I have a new Cam Sensor which I haven't installed yet. I'm under the impression a bad magnet will set a code 41 if the signal ...

88 LN3 Vin C Still runs rough under load

I've replaced plugs, wires, coil, ignition module, vacuum modulator and O2 sensor and she runs MUCH better.

But she still runs rough on the freeway after she's warmed up.

I'm looking into OBDI scan cable/software but I can't find definitions for the 88 LN3 Vin C.

Would I do better getting a ...

Re: 88 LE 112k - runs rough on freeway

Update:

Installed the new aftermarket Magnavox-style ECM. Runs even better but after a road test, it still has the under load misfire.

Without having removed the Camshaft sensor, rotated the crank and looked at the magnet, I'm thinking the magnet is still there but possibly mostly shredded. Enough ...

Re: 88 LE 112k - runs rough on freeway

Zeik, thanks for the photos... worth, uh... 2,000+ words... jk :) The pictures actually help alot.

Correct me if I'm wrong...

The blue wires are all on ONE circuit. How can it matter which order they're in as long as they provide (either) waste spark or main spark (probably have that idea worded ...

Re: 88 LE 112k - runs rough on freeway

Zeik, what a brilliant post! Thank you. :)

Sorry to delay getting back - got sidetracked. Here's what I've got up to now:

After resetting last week, I checked again today and even without the check engine light coming on at any time, it set a code 42.

For the sake of simplicity and because from ...

Re: 88 LE 112k - runs rough on freeway

Zeik, thanks for your time.

Noob questions (2 or 4, maybe 5 or 8)

What's the difference between the ECM and the C3I?

CPS is Camshaft Position Sensor or Crankshaft Position Sensor?

The magnet is part of the Cam Sensor or the Crank sensor?

The cam sensor is left of the water pump and the crank ...
