Failed emissions test...cleaning EGR valve?

Well the car failed the emissions test. I find it really shocking and odd, initially failed the first time. So I sprayed off the mass airflow sensor, and put new plugs in it. After doing that it ran the best its ever ran and even chirps the tires taking off, which it NEVER did before. But upon the ...

Re: Possible symptoms of bad intake gaskets?

Yes mine has a plastic manifold and an EGR valve.

I thought the same thing when I saw the Dexcool sludge. I can only assume some guy at the Autoparts store told a previous owner to use Dexcool and that is what caused it. They didn't start using Dexcool until later on...

As far as replacing the ...

Re: Possible symptoms of bad intake gaskets?

Yeah I thought that might be backwards as I saw the hose by the alternator.

I will run this by my parents, the owners of the car, and see what they want to do. I would totally be all for taking photos of the process providing my parents don't blow it off and decide not to buy the parts or don't ...

Re: Possible symptoms of bad intake gaskets?

Looks like your on to something. I looked around and I am not sure what I am looking at is what your talking about, as I am pretty sure there is no rubber L hose connected to it or anything plastic under the thermostat, but as you can see there is some red crud and a tinge of green along with ...

Re: Possible symptoms of bad intake gaskets?

I assume it had Dexcool as it has that typical Dexcool sludge in it. This car has the Series I L27. So whatever that means. I have no idea if this motor is even original to the car...

The coolant level is always low when I check it. I add some, check it again whenever and its low again. Not ...

Re: Possible symptoms of bad intake gaskets?

No the oil is nice and clean. The cooling system has nasty gunk in it from Dexcool, which I already know to flush out.

The car had a bad TPS and did a similar thing from a cold start as well. I can't remember if it went away after replacement and is now coming back again meaning its time for ...

Possible symptoms of bad intake gaskets?

1993 Bonneville. 180K miles on her.

In the morning taking off from a cold start the car sputters and jerks like its misfiring real bad. If you floor it and launch for a second it clears up and no more problems. Car runs fine other than driving from a cold start. In addition to that the coolant ...

AC Fittings all messed up?

My AC system works extremely well when charged. But it doesn't stay charged. I have tracked the leak down to the low side shrader valve. I know that the shrader valves are not the primary seal, but I also know that my shrader valves are leaking more than the normal, and probably because the car was ...

Towing, or pulling?

Just curious what people think about using a 1993 Bonneville to pull a 1700lb Volkswagen with tow straps? Only like 30 miles or so. Ive certainly read of people pulling more...with similar drivetrain cars.

I am thinking of installing an external transmission cooler for obvious reasons...

Re: A few little questions...

Ive been meaning to buy an owners manual anyways. So I will do that. Thanks.

I did a little digging around in there, I tried to remove the door panel, things started breaking. Stopped.

It has a hack job alarm on it, so they may have just taken the button out and used the wiring for the alarm.

A few little questions...

I have a few questions that I have not been able to get the answer for, so I decided to ask here.

1. On the dashboard is the "Systems Monitor" which shows a diagram of a car. It is NOT the digital one. In the entire time we have owned the car, all it has done is say "Check Oil" when starting on the ...

Re: Car bogs upon acceleration

I think it may be your TPS.

Our 1993 Bonneville bogs as well. No power, bogging. When the check engine light is on. When it is off, it runs OK. We have a TPS code and it makes sense. We will be replacing it soon and I predict it will be good again. It does this on hot days, cold mornings it also ...

Re: Air conditioning compressor clutch

I think that it may be a relay or something.

The AC was working good, then just stopped. So I will check some fuses, and maybe jump that wire and check it out, then report back.

Re: Air conditioning compressor clutch

I predict the relay is fine. I do not know how to test it anyways...
Fuses are good.

I just want to jump the AC clutch to MAKE it run, so I can put some refrigerant in it and then it will run. The clutch did not engage even with jumping the low pressure switch, and there is some charge in it, so I ...

Re: Trouble code reading...

I think 36 can sometimes accompany a 21 because the PCM uses the TPS to determine shifting times. I wouldn't by surprised if it went away when you fix the TPS.

That sounds about right...I unplugged the TPS and plugged it back in, it ran good, but the light came back on, same codes, I guess I will ...

Re: Trouble code reading...

In the future, when you list codes, list the DEFINITION ALSO for others reading the topic. It's common courtesy to your fellow members.

Don't ignore code 36. It's not common, but it can get ugly.

Done, I added what they meant.

Not sure where to go on 36. The trans was low on fluid once or twice ...

Re: Trouble code reading...

Alright, pulled the codes.

21 (Throttle Position Sensor Circuit ( Signal Voltage High ) and 36 (Transaxle Shift Control Problem).

TPS code makes sense, because it has no power or bogs.

Probably just order a new one, only $35 at Rock Auto, and see what happens.

Thanks

Re: Trouble code reading...

Crap, I just looked at the diagram, and realized I am an idiot and was looking at it wrong...

If I jumped the wrong pins, would it cause damage or would a fuse blow first...just wondering in case this connector I have is rigged or something.

Trouble code reading...

I got a paperclip, and a diagram for the connector...but for whatever reason the diagram does not match the connector I have...

I included a picture below...this is the connector under the steering column. Not sure what pins to jump to get the engine light to tell me whats wrong...

Air conditioning compressor clutch

Last summer towards the end of it anyways, the AC in our car died. Well summer is back, and I would like to mess with it. There is still pressure in the system, and it seems like a decent bit at that. But the clutch will not engage.

I jumped the low pressure switch on the drier, and nothing. So I ...
