Re: 98 SLE with oil and antifreeze leaks
There might not be any internal damage, as long as the coolant hasn't been seeping into the oil. Check the oil for sparkles under a powerful light. That'll let you know if there's bottom end damage.
Hmmm... interesting. How powerful of a light? And could that be done during the day, or would ...

Re: 98 SLE with oil and antifreeze leaks
Already a solid response. I like it.
The car has been driven sparingly (by sellers account) for the past 2 years because of the leaks. Guessing 5k or less has been put on this engine, what am I possibly looking at as far as possible internal damage? A little? A lot?
I know all this is purely ...

98 SLE with oil and antifreeze leaks
Hey everybody,
I'm looking to get back into a Bonneville, and have what sounds like a really good deal. I have the opportunity to purchase a 98 SLE in good shape but it has slow antifreeze and oil leaks. I haven't had a Bonneville for almost 2 years, but I know the antifreeze leak is something to ...

Re: Sad day, over 6 months ago.
thanks ga93sle, that's one of the bigger reasons I bought it, it just looks mean. Also, I could tell that the guy who was selling it took really good care of the drivetrain, which, as a student, was my biggest concern. I can drive a car that looks bad but drives great, I can't drive a car that looks ...

Re: Sad day, over 6 months ago.
it really wasn't... the reason they totaled it was because the airbags went off and the cost to replace everything by an expensive body shop outweighed the cost of the car. I have a friend down here in St. Louis who could've helped me fix pretty much everything, but by the time I could've paid for ...

Sad day, over 6 months ago.
This past July 11th I totaled my beloved Bonnie, the first car I'd ever bought. It's too complicated to explain in a post, but we'll just say that construction zones around St. Louis in the middle of summer with heavy, backed-up traffic aren't the best place to rely on anti-lock brakes... Anyway, I ...

Hey everyone,
So, after changing my trans fluid, my car still has trans problems. It seems to be most noticeable when accelerating from a complete, or near complete, stop and only when i depress my go fast pedal more than 15%. It feels like the engine (or something in the drivetrain) is loose and ...

also, how easy is it to change trans fluid? I just talked to my local garage, and they said that they'd need a few hours to do it... no big deal, but I'm just wondering if I could do it myself in less time... thanks

Re: Sludge (???) in coolant tank and trans fluid problems...
well, I definitely don't abuse/neglect my trans, and I never though to check the fluid because the mechanic who put it in said he put fresh trans fluid in, and I trust him. (my family has bought a few cars from him, he's a good guy). The used trans I got was supposed to be in great shape, and it ...

Sludge (???) in coolant tank and trans fluid problems...
Hey everyone,
Yesterday I checked my transmission fluid because my car has been shifting hard lately, and honestly that's the only thing that I have the tools/equipment to check. I got the trans replaced at 197k, and the replacement had just over 56k on it, so I wasn't thinking it could be the ...

Re: Oil for high mileage
those all sound like great options. I just got my oil changed, but next time i do i'll check around for prices.
Ed, what would you consider a "decent filter"? Are there certain brands that are better? Or certain sizes? Does any other size filter even fit my car, like, a bigger one maybe?

Oil for high mileage
I keep seeing the "High Mileage" oil in auto parts stores, but "high mileage" these days means >75K.....
so i'm like

So, my question is, what kind of oil do you guys use for your 200k+ cars?

Fiberglassing in St. Louis
Hey, anyone know of any fiberglassers in the STL area that could build a console and a few other boxes for me? The center console is going to hold an in-dash touch screen and two 8" subs, and the other two boxes will hold two 10's in one and a 15" in the spare tire well. Any help would be great ...
