Can someone tell me how to see what one I have?

Hello, I have a question about what transmission should I get for durability and performance? I have a 97 bonneville SE, 3800. I believe that the transmission needs to be replaced and I am looking to replace it with a used one. Low budget can not afford new. Thanks for the suggestions.

I did a quick search on code PO 740 and found what it was but no real place to start trouble shooting. I am hoping that someone can lead me in the right direction. Mind you now with my search I found low fluid to replace transmission. Thanks .
