Re: Should I repair '94 SLE or sadly say good-bye?

As long as the subframe, brake likes and fuel lines aren't about to rot out, I would fix it.

Get a cheap power steering cooler. ($30-40) You can bypass it but it'll cut some life out of the system.
Run new wire(s) to the coolant temp sensor from the plug at the firewall
Clean the TB with MAF ...

Re: Should I repair '94 SLE or sadly say good-bye?

#4 can literally cause #2 and #3. PCMs can also be an occaisional pain point on these era cars. Same with ground busses.

I am not sure about the rest of your circumstances, but you are also in danger of the car degrading more quickly because of not being used.

Where are you located?
Thank you ...

Should I repair '94 SLE or sadly say good-bye?

I have the following issues with my '94 SLE (only 88,000 miles) and am desparately trying to decide if I should repair the vehicle or sadly say good-bye (original owner):

1. Power steering heat exchanger appears to be leaking and needs to be replaced now
2. Intermittent high engine idle (as high ...

3500 Engine RPM at Idle and Coasting

Recently, when my wife started our '94 Bonneville SLE to leave a grocery store parking lot, the engine speed immediately went to 3500 rpm and stayed there. (This was the case in both Park and Drive with her foot off the gas pedal.)

The engine rpm stayed at 3500 coasting all the way to her 2nd stop ...

Re: Replace Engine Coolant Temp Sensor or ECM?

Shaking the wiring harness, rather harshly, eliminated the problem!

No more chiming, no more illumination of the check gauges light, and no more jumps in the coolant temperature when data logging.

Thanks everyone! (I apologize for not providing this update months ago. I forgot to close the loop.)

Re: 94 Bonneville SLE Coolant Leak

You're going to have to follow the stream of coolant to track it to the source, because many things can affect that area, including the water pump itself (there is a weephole at the bottom of the pump shaft), coolant bypass, heater hose inlet, and lower radiator hose fitting.
RJolly, thanks again ...

Re: 94 Bonneville SLE Coolant Leak

Are you able to post pictures of where the coolant is pooling please. There are several possible offenders in the areas you could be describing.
RJolly, thanks for the reply. I have a picture to post, but I need help inserting it. Can someone please provide directions? (I read the FAQ ...

94 Bonneville SLE Coolant Leak

My 94 Bonneville SLE (~84K miles) was slowly leaking coolant for about a month. I could see coolant on top of the engine between the valve cover and I believe the lower intake manifold; a small spot was also evident on the ground below the engine. I was adding about 8 ounces of coolant every 2 weeks ...

Re: 94 Bonneville SLE Sudden Severe Power Loss

Jolly, the car only has 80,800 miles. A couple of months ago, I replaced the plugs & wires. I am slowly losing coolant; I can smell it in the engine compartment after vehicle use. However, the system held 15 psi with a pressure tester.

96 SSEi, I do have an intermittent SES light. The code is P1406 ...

Re: 94 Bonneville SLE Sudden Severe Power Loss

96 SSEi, thanks for the quick reply. You were correct, my catalytic converter was almost completely plugged; I could barely see light looking through either the converter inlet end or outlet. Interestingly, the inlet and outlet honeycomb areas showed no signs of being plugged. Is it normal for the ...

94 Bonneville SLE Sudden Severe Power Loss

Recently, from a steady 35 mph my '94 SLE suddenly lost severe power and I could hear loud exhaust-type sounding noise from the front half of the vehicle. We "crawled" home at a few mph for about a mile.

During inspection of the underside of the vehicle I noticed that the outlet pipe of the ...

Re: Replace Engine Coolant Temp Sensor or ECM?

I replaced the spark plugs and spark plug wires. Unfortunately, I'm still seeing the same jumps in coolant temperature when data logging.

How do I go about testing the wiring for an intermittent short? (The glitch is prevalent at temperatures above ambient.)

Re: Replace Engine Coolant Temp Sensor or ECM?

Yes. Testing the wiring is the next step after you verify the sensor itself.

The vehicle has the original spark plug wires (21-yrs old, 80K miles). Is it possible the spark plug wires now have deteriorated and leaking insulation allowing sparks to intermittently leak through the insulation to the ...

Re: Replace Engine Coolant Temp Sensor or ECM?

This weekend I replaced the engine coolant temperature sensor with a new AC Delco part. Unfortunately, I noticed basically the same jumps in coolant temp when data logging.

Is it possible for this erratic behavior to be caused by an intermittent wiring issue? It seems to me it's now either wiring ...

Re: Replace Engine Coolant Temp Sensor or ECM?

Dexcool can gunk up the sensor. It's a fairly known issue.

As always, start small/easy first. ECM replacement is the LAST thing you do.

CMNTMXR57, thank you for your response.

We are the original owners of the vehicle. I am the only one to have replaced/maintained the cooling system. I have ...

Replace Engine Coolant Temp Sensor or ECM?

On our 94 SLE after some engine warm-up, the check gauges light illuminates for approx. 5 to 10 seconds and I hear a chime, but no issue with the temp, oil, or voltage gauges. Also, the electric engine cooling fan(s) are "on" when the check gauges light is illuminated.

Using an OBD Diagnostics ...
