Re: Saving an SSEi that was put out to pasture

Going through this post was a joy, can't wait to see more pics of the car all cleaned up. Great find and awesome work fixing it up, especially your free fixes!
Thanks! I'll probably start focusing on the cosmetics of the car a little more as I run out of mechanical/electrical issues to ...

One more project to update you on...

I agonized over making decision of where to place these special posts in the shop. My trusses were in the way. I thought about setting them off to the side, and driving cars into that bay diagonally, but then I'd have clearance issues trying to lift suburbans (for example) up high into the air. I ...

Loss of power...

So the other weekend I started fooling around with the AC (it's getting HOT here on the left coast). I charged the system, and once it started coming up to pressure, the compressor actually started kicking on again. Before I knew it, I had cold air blow again! But only for about a day. :???: The ...

Re: Saving an SSEi that was put out to pasture

Here's a quick cheesy fix for the ripped out bumper mounting holes. I took some galvanized plumber's tape and stretched it across the mounting studs. The holes didn't line up, so I clamped onto the tape between each span and gave it a twist with some needle-nose pliers to take up some slack. After ...

Re: Saving an SSEi that was put out to pasture

Here's a few pics from the reassembly process when I replaced the valve cover, upper and lower intake manifold gaskets.

Re: Saving an SSEi that was put out to pasture

As promised, here's the reworked console latch. Works great now. :) I get a lot of satisfaction out of eliminating annoying problems without spending any money.

and coming up for a fix for the console latch. It won't latch, is constantly flipped up, and annoying.
One thing I never got around to fixing on my 93... eventually just took the spring out of the hinge and dealt with it...
Removing the hinge spring would certainly make this a lot less annoying ...

Re: Saving an SSEi that was put out to pasture

Be safe, let us know how it goes..
Overall, the car ran great. I felt a couple funny shifts on the freeway when I was transitioning from cruising to lightly accelerating. I don't know if that's gonna start becoming an issue.

Also, I recharged the AC a few days ago and it worked great, but it ...

Re: Saving an SSEi that was put out to pasture

Make sure it is using premium gas.
Indeed. That was the first thing I did to try to make the detonation go away, but it turned out to be the spark plugs.

Anyway, I just got the car all cleaned up. Tomorrow we take it on a trip. We've got to take the new baby down to visit some family. Her great ...

Re: Saving an SSEi that was put out to pasture

I can confirm having had both. 92-95 (and older) is under the hood. 96-99 they switched to hiding behind the rear bumper.
The compressor?
Yes.
Ah. That settles it then. I've still not torn into the compressor yet, hopefully that will work out well when the time comes.

Yesterday I fixed a couple ...

Re: Saving an SSEi that was put out to pasture

The temp gauges are notoriously inaccurate. I'd trust the scanner over the gauge.
Thanks, that's good to know. Judging by the scanner, the thermostat seems to be working perfectly. The car drives around at a steady 196 (assuming a 195 OE t-stat?). I let it idle in our recent heat wave here, and ...

Re: Saving an SSEi that was put out to pasture

Well I got it running a little better. The miss is gone now, after cleaning and inspecting all the ignition parts. It turns out, it had iridium plugs that are in great shape. I think they may run a little hot though. If I put it at WOT for over 3-5 seconds, I start getting a rattling sound coming ...

Re: Saving an SSEi that was put out to pasture

Thanks. I did get it all cleaned up and put back together last night. Unfortunately, the car has a bad miss. I'm getting P0300, so it's calling it a random miss. That doesn't help me track it down much.

Tonight I'm going to tear into some things. I wouldn't be surprised if the plugs are fouled ...

Re: Saving an SSEi that was put out to pasture

Well I got to work on this over Memorial Weekend, but my wife went into labor on the following Tuesday. We now have a beautiful baby girl keeping us up at night.

I haven't done any work since then, but should be putting the car back together tomorrow. I was definitely able to identify some severe ...

Re: Saving an SSEi that was put out to pasture

Is there much to consider in terms of quality for the plenum gasket?

Does the Felpro MS95744 work fine for the most part? I don't know if this gasket is prone to any failures, or if there's ever been a redesign.

Re: Saving an SSEi that was put out to pasture

Well I've found the Felpro MS 98014 T for $53.99. I assume this is the right kit for the LIM? I found an AC Delco one $10 cheaper, but it didn't look like it came with all the o-rings and whatnot.

RJolly, are you sure there's no UIM for the supercharger? It seems like the supercharger would just ...

Re: Saving an SSEi that was put out to pasture

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I've looked over things carefully after an oil change and a short driving trip. I'm seeing both coolant and oil on top of the motor. Also, I think I'm seeing some coolant contamination in the oil. I have some light condensation under the oil cap (this doesn't ...
